Nice score, 49s looks awesome cept for the hits on the jaw, 64 at best imo.
MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.
  • Exactly how did you manage to come across these dimes at such a low price?

My guess is that he steals them, the $1.20 each is for gas and a new crowbar to break into someone's house...

I got them at the local coin shop. They are very nice people, but know very little about coins. The shop attendant called the owner and asked what the price of this collection was,and he said $ 1.20 ea. if I bought all of them. There were 87 in all and I bargained him down to $100 out the door.

I overheared one of the shop guys tell a customer that wanted to buy a 2007-W silver eagle that they weren't out yet.I had to tell him that I had 20 at home in the safe.

From the looks of the proofs in the picture, it appears there are 14 silver proofs (1950-64 I assume) and three clad proofs (1968-1970 I assume). Further it appears that all of the proofs have Cameo or DCAM obverses. It would not surprise me to see that the reverses also have Cameo of DCAM reverses.

If I am correct about the proofs being from 1950-1970 with Cameo of DCAM examples of each date, you have done very well for yourself. These kinds of proofs are very difficult to locate. I saw a set of raw 1950-64 Cameo/DCAM proof dimes in a Capital holder for sale at the 2005 SF ANA show for $2,000.00. While that price is extremly high, there is not doubt in my mind that the proof alone in your new set would fetch $500.00 or more is sold raw to a Cameo collector. If the coins are slabbed by PCGS and come back as high grade (66 or higher) Cameo and/or DCAM coins, you would be looking at well over $1,000.00 (higher if certain dates in the 50's graded DCAM at 67 or higher).

    Good luck.

    I am jealous.

I guess I did not read the op completely regarding the proofs (it is stated the dates for the proofs are from 59-98).

I assumed that since there are 18 proofs pictured with 15 in one group and 3 in another group that the coins were 1950-64 and 1968-70. My bad, but nice looking proofs anyway.
  • Wow, I think you got a great buy.
