Instead of adding more light, lower the shutter speed. You'll be amazed at how much mor detail you will get. I have taken some really good pics of coins using a 4 second shutter speed.
DJ, if you are use Photoshop to resize the pics, uncheck the resample box where you set the size pic you want, and all of the pixels will be used (more pixels per inch)
