Does Anyone Have a "First Date in the Series" Type Collection?

Or how about a last date in the series type set? I've always wanted to collect the first date in the series in GEM starting with the 20th century (e.g. 1909 cent, 1913 5c, 1916 10c, etc.). Has anyone done something similar?

There is a well-known collection in the Midwest that is a complete type set, almost exclusively Gem Unc., that includes only first-year-of-issue pieces.

No, but for my Dansco 7070 Type set I usually try to get the first year issue of each coin, when I can afford them.

I started down that path and quickly realized it wasn't for me. I hated passing on a beautiful coin of another date for a more fugly first date of issue specimen. After once or twice doing that, I was done!

1916 SLQ? Ouch.

I like that idea, what I have for one of my 7070s is "same dates/different designs" such as a 1909 indian/lincoln, 1883 shield/v-nick etc.

Makes for a fun way to change things around.

Speaking of "ouch", finding that 1913 liberty/buffalo nickel is gonna be slightly tough

true dat, but fortunately there are 3 different 1883 nickels that fit the bill in the type album

That assumes you think of it as a real, legitimate coin.

I think collecting the first year of issue for a type set is a great idea. As far as the 20th century goes, only the 1916 slq will be a potential stopper. But once you get this date, all others will be relatively easy. In my opinion, the first year stratedy is much more interesting than the last year approach. I have an idea. How about collecting both first and last year of each issue? You will have beauty, variety and value.
