Any fans of Mexican coins out there?

Mike at About Rare Coins showed this one to me, extremely rare coin in any grade.

He is a expert in Mexican coinage and is the reason I collect them.

    Yes. I have 38 coins from Mexico from an 1867 ¼ Reale to a 1988 1000 Pesos.

    Four are silver:
    KM 447 - 1944 - 50 Centavos - .720 silver
    KM 459 - 1961 - 1 Peso - .100 silver
    KM 465 - 1948 - 5 Pesos - .900 silver
    KM 483.2 - 1978 - 100 Pesos - .720 silver

None are as nice as your KM 456!

That coin made me dig out my Dansco #7220 "Mexico Type" album to see if I had a '49 Morelos in the hole... unfortunately it was a '47 image oh well..

BTW, Was Morelos the inventor of the "Do-Rag"?

Yep. Got quite a few raw coins. As a matter of fact, does anyone need any moderns?
    I have a bunch of 1, 2 and 5 pesos back to the 80s...

There is something here for everyone... well designed coins, rarity and even coins that can be affordable. Unfortunately completing an 8 Reales set is not in the cards for me.

One of my favorite countries to collect. I have had a standing offer for about 7 months now to Mexican Coin Company to sell me gold 1 pesos from the 1880's, 90's, and early 1900's in slabbed 65 or better at $350 and up....none has been offered.

    Cool coins, everyone.

That '05 2 Centavos is a nice piece, too. Those were Birmingham-minted ('05-'06), I believe. Wondering why such a jump in mintage figures between the years, perhaps production didn't start until late 1905?
  • Is there any chance that Mike and Morelos on the coin is the same person?

Place a cap on the Mike’s head and there may be a strong resemblance.

They both have similar eyes, chin, nose, neck, and hair.

    Hmmmm

  • Regarding the 1905 2 Centavo....
Actually, if my memory serves correctly, the 1906 issue was minted in Birmingham, England as well as Mexico City. They are indistinguishable. I believe it was Neil Utberg a specialist from the 1960's that stated this little factoid.
The 1905 2 centavo is a Mexico City product and was produced to the tune of 50,000 pieces. Today the coin is a true rarity.
    Thanks
    Mike

Morelos wore the do-rag because he suffered from intense migrain headaches. I get them too but it seems to me that that wrapping my head would make them worse.

That's a nice looking Mex Rev 10 centavo. I have a small collection of asst. pieces I enjoy very much.
My favorite is from a place called Amecameca. It's not my most expensive but is very interesting.
My wife is from Mexico and she says that Mexicans (the kind from Mexico) are genious' at making due with what they have. I've been there and most people are poor (understatement) so they are or become master improvisors out of necessity.
Amecameca had no natural resources during the rev war but they needed coins. Some enterprising guy noticed that on a rail spur there was an old brass railroad tanker that was used to transport molases.
Well needless to say that molases tanker made quite a few coins. Even so, real pieces are still quite scarce.
Mexican pieces both federal and revolutionary, from all time periods actually, are most fascinating.

    How about an original Morelos?

I know I post this a lot and the reason I do is because out of all the coins I own, this is my favorite.

  • Desert Rat,
Nice SUD. Lots of interesting things happening on the surface of that piece. Its really nice when an example is in such nice shape that you can see all the minute detail.
    It certainly is a keeper!

I had a chance to pick-up some Mexican Revolution pieces today. Nothing too exciting, but the color on this Madera Brigade piece from Chiconcuautla made me want to photograph it before putting it in an acetone bath with the rest. Talk about an "electric blue" copper image

    image

Two other pieces include 3 Centavos from Oaxaca and a Morelos 10 Centavos.
  • I'm going to have to have a039 image my Muera Huerta to post. Some folks ought to get a kick out of it.

Here are the other 2 pick-ups. I'm having trouble shooting the color on Oaxaca Tres without having light glare spots - looks like I might have to play with diffusing the light more.

I biased but does this look nicer than MS63 to anyone else?
