just received my 07 w ase.........

and I noticed a destinct difference in the finish of the 2 that I got. One is more brilliant less satin and the other is more flat and deep satin! Do you think PCGS will recognize deep satin versus less so like proof issues and cameo? obviously the deeper is the earlier die strike. Should I send these in for "early strike"? Is PCGS ready to give out MS70 yet?

I have received 4 of the 6 that I purchased. One popped out of the plastic capsule as I opened the blue mint box. That made it a simple decision to which one would go into my Dansco album.

To me, none of them look any different than any of the non mintmarked 07 I have or have seen, but I like them none the less.
  • Bobby,

I purchased just a few of these and I too noticed that one of them was incredibly satiny like the die was totally fresh out of the glass beader, or what ever it is they do to these dies, and the other UNC Eagles I have have that more brilliant look to them you mentioned.

I would guess those brilliant ones are actually a later die state as the rough surface of the die has worn slightly more creating a less deep, dull satin finish. I was going to post a comment about it too but without pictures to show what I'm talking about decided against it.

  • Doubtful they will recognize the different finish. The cut-off for the First Strike designation on the 2007-W ASE is Jul 13th. If you only have two coins to send in, the cheapest grading tier would be Express Special at $50/coin + $10/coin for the First Strike insert. Definitely not worth it in my opinion, especially since PCGS will not designate ASE's MS70. Across the street may be a better option for you.

You only need to get it to PCGS by Jul 13th. No need for Express. that is my understanding.

Th cheapest grading tier for grading two ASE coins accorging to the PCGS Services Guidelines is Express Special at $50/coin + $10 if you want the First Strike insert.

  • I went through a batch of 100. 1 of them was popped out of the holder, the rest were secure. I also found one eagle with a distinctive super nice frost on it. Much whiter than the rest. It stood out immediately.

You need to send in 5 coins to qualify for the $14 rate.

But here is a question: Since the US is part of the world, why can you have it graded under one of the world catagories? Not trying to be a smart a$$, just seems like you should be able to. Are US coins easier or more difficult to grade?
I'd keep playing. I don't think the heavy stuff will be coming down for quite a while!

so why can't the w's be acknowledged for there varying states of frost or burnish. Is it not the same as cameo or deep cameo?

That is simply part of the grading. The highest grades have to really pop. These could pop due to real new dies. As the die wears from use the frost is less, well, frosty.
