Photo Seal and beyond

RYKRYK Posts: 35,799 ✭✭✭✭✭
There is talk about the possibility of a new service (I will not mention the C-word image ) that might offer a Rick Snow style Photo Seal-like service for all types of coins. (link to thread about Photo Seal)

Would you be interested in such a service for your coins? If it were free? If you had to pay a nominal charge?

Would it be important whose expertise is being tapped to verify the grade? I think that one reason Photo Seal is successful is that one of the leading experts on IHCs is the one doing grade verification. If he were also verifying grades on bust dollars or state quarters, the verification would be less meaningful, IMO.

No. The TPG guarantees authenticity, so what we're really talking about is an opinion of their opinion. I can get that on the bourse anytime I ask a dealer what he'll pay for a coin.

If the dealers that photo seal the coins also sells the coins, there is a conflict of interest.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

No. However, the mere fact that it is being seriously considered should cause the major TPG's concern. If 50-80% of coins submitted to a photo seal service are rejected, a TPG could find itself without future submissions.

Man, I looked across the street, and didn't see this question posed. I looked at Legend's site too, and it just wasn't there. Is this the only site being targeted?

I don't think it would fly.

The photoseal concept was a good one. The idea was really more along the lines of, "these are premium coins for the grade and please offer them back to me if you ever sell". That is of course, if he needs the coin, etc.

For a new collector, it gives a sense of security. As experienced is gained, the PS isn't needed.

The worst part has become having to deal with all the PS plastic cards rubber-banded to slabs at auction preview. They are a hassle to deal with and my fingers hurt after auction lot viewing (hangnails, etc). image

I find absolutely no need to pay addittional grading fees above and beyond one of the current top TPG services hit me for. I am for the most part satisfied with them. Mistakes can happen with any service, including this photo service dealer.

"They" are not pushing these threads. I am, mostly because I have my own doubts that this venture will be successful, and secondarily because they seem to be pushing some buttons behind the scene. image

I have no beef against PCGS. There are times when I do not agree with their grading, but I have been supportive of PCGS with my time and my money. And you?

Edited to remove insulting retort. I see your agenda. Your cup (ebay and registry) runneth over with CU-infused product. I would be worried, too. image

Even if they became successful, what's to stop them from eventually dominating the hobby like the slabbers now do? And just like the slabbers, will the problems they were "born" to address and fix cause other problems that keep getting worse? Would they become the de facto marketmakers of new services from which they would profit handsomely?

Exactly, and then, 20 years from now, we will need another service to be a watchdog for this service which is the watchdog for the incumbent TPGs, who are the watchdogs for....

You have been starting one thread after another. First as the front man for the so called "coilition". After that failed, you have been trying to do it in a more subtle way. Maybe others find it OK, but I do not. I spend my share of money and time with PCGS, and quite pleased with the overall product they provide to the market place. Furthermore, I think they have done more to help this hobby than hurt it. I am quit. As far as my fat_____ goes, it would be my pleasure to meet you some time!!!!!

Perhaps so. But with the passing of time, IMO, the amount of "hurt" TPGs are bringing to the hobby is gaining on the amount of "help." At some point, if the trend continues, "hurt" may overtake "help," and sooner rather than later.

Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. It's looking more and more like the major TPGs are coming closer and closer to having "absolute power" over the hobby, IMO, and I don't think that's good for it.

I appreciate what the reputable TPGs brought to the hobby, but it's no longer enough to just authenticate and grade coins. Now they use marketing to convince people they need stuff they've never needed before. To pay 10x more for an MS-69 than for an MS-68. To pay a lot more for one indistinguishable coin over another because of when the Mint shipped it. And I can think of others, too.

I just thought it better when they stuck to just grading and authenticating instead of marketmaking and creating demand for their own new ways to collect which the markets never used to care about.

Yes, I have been known to do that around here, to stimulate discussion. Try it sometime, why don't you?

First as the front man for the so called "coilition".

As I said earlier, I am no front man for anyone. I was asked by a former member to make one post, and it got me thinking. You should try it sometime...thinking, that is.

    Coalition is spelled c-o-a-l-i-t-i-o-n, FYI.

After that failed, you have been trying to do it in a more subtle way.

Example, please, although since your premise is false, it will be of no use.

Maybe others find it OK, but I do not.

If you disagree with me, say so without telling me to buzz off and accusing me of "propaganda". Unlike you, I have no financial stake (ie. an ebay store with over 700 CU-graded products). I am just a lowly collector who buys coins. I prefer then to be in PCGS slabs, but I will take them any way I can get them.

As for the last remark, I apologize as it was inappropriate and uncalled for.

I can already see C-members roaming bourse floors with White-Out® and Sharpies® in hand to fix all the TPG mistakes.
