I accidentally made an point against coins yesterday....

So I walk into a dollar store type place after eating at a burger place next door. It's pretty close to the house so I figured I'd check it out. While there, I found some cloths for the kiddo so the wife and I picked out a few outfits. It's about to storm outside so I let the wife take the kiddo out to the truck before it starts. The lady rings me up and says $20 and change. I pull out the credit card and swipe it. What's this? No option for credit. The lady says, we only take debit cards and cash. I said, no prob and pulled out a twenty and a one. I hand it to her. She fumbles a quarter a couple of times trying to get it out of the change slot. She says, "Man, I'm having the hardest time getting that quarter." I replied, "If you took credit cards, you wouldnt be having that problem right now." She then went into how they prefer to keep the cost down by not accepting them. I didnt have it in me to tell her that I wouldnt be back b/c they didnt take credit cards. They didnt lose much biz, though. I doubt I would be doing a lot of business there anyway... just the occasional what ever when a small need should arise.

Btw, it was a pleasant exchange.

But you are just one of many, many customers who might not frequent there for similar reasons. Same goes for merchants on eBay who don't take PayPal. Some buyers don't even consider them, not because of the buyer's protection thing but because of the inconvenience of sending a check and the longer wait to receive the lot.

As a buyer, I'm happy to hear that more and more people don't bujy from sellers that don't take PayPal. I have yet to get burned and in fact, have had more problems with people who I have paid by PayPal. This leaves more lots open to me to get for much less than I would have to pay for otherwise.

I understand your wish to pay by credit card. But, you go to a discount store, what do you expect? They are selling at lower cost. Why? Because they cut corners wherever they can to save a penny in order to offer it to you at a discount. Not losing 4% to a credit card is one way they can save a few bucks and continue offering items at a discount. If they were to increase prices to cover these costs, they likely would not be in business.

I am not sure that I am ready for logic or discussions of fact on the CU forum. Good answer for those who are.

I must admit, I do the same thing. On the higher priced items I can understand, in fact I do not take Paypal for items over a few thousand. On lower priced items, PayPal is simply too convenient. I have often passed up items if the seller does not take it.image

Aside from credit card commercials on tv, I've never been in a checkout line held up because of confusion caused by somebody trying to use cash to pay for their purchase. OTOH, I'm regularly in checkout lines held up because of buyers trying to use plastic, who can't figure out how to use the card swipe machine and need to have the cashier help them. Or try to use a card which the card swipe machine won't read. Or try to use a card, and find that it's declined.

As far as stores losing business because they don't accept plastic... one of the local markets doesn't accept bank cards, and they have signs at each checkout counter explaining why they don't. I choose to shop there over their competitors because I'm not forced to pay prices which include the cost of a service I'm not using, and I'd be surprised to find that I'm the only one who felt that way.

I rarely use cash anymore. It seems to have lost its usefulness for the large majority of my transactions.

I expect nothing. ...which is exactly what they can expect from me.

You is lucky image. I just got burned for $60 earlier this year by sending a MO to some guy in California. The guy didn't accept paypal but he had nearly 200 FBs and all were positive. The guy just decided to cut his losses apparently as I was not the only person he ripped off. By the time his account was NARU'd he'd accumulated 20 negs all stating they sent MO's and never received their coins. Many of the buyers were ripped off for over $2000. image I guess I got off easy. image

I like the good old fashioned money for small stuff.

But on ebay paypal is better, faster and safer than sending checks.

Yeah I almost never carry cash anymore. It is sort of weird because a year or two ago I would have said different. I just slowly moved away from cash and now...rarely have it. It is nice to have to tip people with though.

So how long until we are a cashless society?

No, I am not personally a slave to the plastic but am making the point that many people on eBay are. They insist on credit and PayPal. I've bought there with and without. Only had one bad experience as a buyer and it just happened to be with a seller paid by PayPal. But of the hundreds of others, it has been successful because the sellers were selected by their selling patterns and feedback appearance.
