Jim Kaat...

The first baseball card I ever had was given to me by my grandfather. It was a Jim Kaat card. Now that I've run out of things that I'm interested in doing, I'm going to start collecting his cards. If you have any you would like to sell or trade or any interesting Jim Kaat merch, please let me know. Maybe you have an interesting story about him. I'd love to hear about it. Thanks!

I grew up in Minnesota and I clearly remember Kaat doing TV commercials on the benefits of drinking milk. CloverLeaf I think it was. He had an all-american persona about him.
I was at the game when he broke his hand sliding into second base. He was 10-2 at the time and lost for the season. 1972, I think.
I think he still brodcasts Yankees games.

Unfortunately, Kaat retired from the broadcast booth. Last year was his last.

I wonder if Mr. Kaat will get in the HOF someday. I mean, wasn't he like the Ozzie Smith of pitchers (fielding wise)?

Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

Kitty was also one of the best hitting pitchers ever. I really enjoyed listening to him broadcast games.

The only story I can tell about kitty is that he belongs in the Hall of Fame.

    Good for you.
  • Loved Kaat's college baseball broadcasts from mid- to late-80s . . . very articulate and always interesting.

As a Minnesota boy, too, Kaat was always a favorite.

As others have already mentioned, great hitting pitcher, fine fielder, and smooth, fluid delivery. Almost effortless.

    HOF . . . YES.
  • Here's a pic from the 1967 Twins yearbook.
