Picked up two of these today. One in a 2x2 and the other in a souvenier set.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Congratulations on the purchases. About a year and a half ago, I picked up three of the Souv sets from the local flea market for $5.00 per set. Each set had the Wide Rim in it. image I remember when I could buy nice UNCs for $6.50 each about 7 years ago. When PCGS started attributing them, that luck ran dry. I did very well with them when I sold them. I've got two of my MS66s left in my personal collection. Never could score a 67.

The souv set would go 63 while the raw coin may hit 64. Nothing really huge except the grin on my face! At $6 for the set, and $1.50 for the raw coin, I found it rather ............................. satisfying! image

    Congrats.

I send two in a few years ago. The best one was 65.

  • Lee, the interesting thing, at least one interesting thing, is the huge number of WR dies reported by the mint, a number almost equal to number of dies used for the normal '79-P. Since the Mint is generally pretty careful about such numbers, it is a first class mystery as WR's certainly aren't all that common, maybe 1 in 50 to 1 in a hundred on average in SBA bags and rolls.....

If anybody has an explanation I would love to hear it! Rob

I dug an AU from a bag of 1000 SBA's about ten years ago. I still have it. I paid a dollar for it from the local dealer. He was going to turn the bag into the bank and asked if I wanted to search it first.

Cool pick up, I like the wide rim I pick them up when ever I can at the right price and what is WR Dies I would like to see that so I can look to see if I have any.image

    Hoard the keys.
  • Okay, can someone please post comparison pictures of these two rim differences... and further explain what (else?) to look for. I still haven't figured it out. I now have 7 (pocket change) SBA's in my "junk box" (that has SBA's, Sac's, Bicentennial Quarters & worn wheaties). I have looked over all seven, not two of them seem to have the same rim width, and some of them don't even have the same width around the entire coin.
  • Can't post (yet) but the WR is securely identified by the one and the last 9: both are about as close to the rim as the bottom part of the number is wide.

Lee's pictures at the top of this thread show this perfectly.

The comon 1979-P SBA has a little more than twice that separation. Rob

Oh, okay... I think I get it now. So, it's only a designation for the 1979... and the P-mint?

I think the "skinniest" rim I have (where the points/corners nearly touch the edge) is on a 1999.
