Ugh, I'm losing collecting interest...

kiyotekiyote Posts: 5,588 ✭✭✭✭✭
It's waning fast. I like to get interesting modern issues straight from the mint but keeping up is just insane any more. First Wives, gold bison, platinum issues, now the W sets and presidental dollars, it's too damn much! Actual room for physical storage will become an issue at some point. I think I'm paring down my holdings to the following:

Complete Kennedy Half set PDSS
Complete Washington Quarter/State quarter set PDSS
Complete Franklin half Set Unc and proof.
Complete Eisenhower, SBA, SAC, Prezs Unc and proof.
Complete Jefferson nickel set Unc and proof.
Complete Proof Platinum $50.00 set
Complete Memorial Lincoln Set, Unc and proof.
Complete Unc Silver Eagle set
Captial Plastics 20th century type set
My random, fun 24-coin World 1-oz silver bullion set.
Type set of PCGS Graded $2.00 bills.

I haven't bought anything in a while, just the Presidental Dollar proof set and updates for my 2007 Sac & Kennedies. I know I'll get back into collectioning, but in the meantime I'm frusterated as heck. If First Ladies become hot, too bad, I'm just gonna have to miss it. I'd rather take my September vacation to Greece.

While I agree with you, and all the tons of "new" obverse/reverse coins take the enjoyment away from me due to the multitude, there are still people out there that want changes on many things, constantly. The introduced bill to get the reverse of the Sacs to change is just another one.

While there is some truth to new designs bringing people in, we should be careful not to drive people out.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Except for ASEs (which I will still collect new issues of) I will no longer buy anything from the mint, after 32 years of at least buying the proof and mint sets every year. The proliferation of mint products has finally turned me off.

I also will be unloading everything I own post-1970 (except ASEs).

I agree about the mint putting out to much stuff, I used to shake my head looking at the rediculous number of offerings from the Canadian Mint...it seems like the U.S. Mint is giving them some pretty good competition now. The sad thing though is as much as I can afford I like to try to keep up to date as much as I can. I am getting to tthe point where I feel like I should draw a date line cut-off and get back to collecting "real" coins.

There's always the "classics" to fall back on.

this is just my opinion, but you strike me as an accumulator.

i am failing to see any theme in your collection.

you went from thing to thing to thing. have spent your wad
and realize there are better things to spend it on then coins.

it appears to be a bunch of stuff that anyone can get anytime.

no different then walking into walmart and getting your fix.

just my thoughts on why you are bored.
popping your CC into the mint website must get rather dull.

image Looks like all you did was spend money.

Try collecting the circulating Memorial Lincolns or Jeffersons from rolls and trades.

The only modern issues I collect now are Gold Buffaloes and just for fun the Presidential Wives. Everything else is much older.

Although if the Gold starts fractionals the number of moderns I collect will double overnight. image

I stopped collecting most everything in your list for similar reasons.

You'll get all sorts of opinions, here's mine: Pick a classic set, any set, doesn't have to be the most expensive or widely collected, but focus on it. Pick one where everything is not readily available and will require a lot of searching to complete. For example, I collect pl/dmpl morgans, I am still searching for about 20 more of the rarer prooflikes and have been searching for years. I think a lot of the fun is in the search!!
Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

Agreed, mine new one is a half eagle mint mark type set. Starting with the liberty and will branch out to the other designs when it is done. I even requested to have PCGS setup a registry for the liberty type set.

I think this is something everyone goes through, it's not you lost interest but you changed or refined your focus.

It's a good thing, pick the things you like and focus on those serries.

It's better to have a smaller better collection than a room full of stuff that puts you to sleep and becomes work just to keep updated.

With eBay, Teletrade, and other online coin stores, anyone can collect anything very easily (finances permitting of course.)

true enough. even the classics can be completed by a rich person
    within a few years.

the difference is, his collection will not look much like another
person's collection. these coins circulated and some are known
to have total pops in the dozens. yada yada

a lot of the stuff he listed, you can buy a few, switch them around
and you cannot even tell which is which. they are identical more or
less. (some people have a good eye though with all things when
there is something that allows them to be different, "toning" for example).

my point is that i think he has chosen rather bland paths and
is now quite bored with it? all his peers collections basically are
    all identical. GEMS galore!

Like the others, I believe you could restore your collecting interests by choosing one very focused area or specialization that is difficult enough that it will require some effort and patience, but not so difficult that it will seem impossible. Concentrate on that area and let the thrill of the hunt bring back your desire.

With a specialized collecting focus you can tell a story with your collection...make it mean something other than just a large accumulation of mint products.

I hope you find your passion for collecting again soon! image

I still don't own a single Morgan or Peace dollar-- I'd really like to get a nice uncirculated 1921 Peace Dollar.

I still have a collecting mindset-- as insane as this sounds, I'm going through about a hundred one dollar bills a week looking for the lowest serial number I can find. It's some sort of fun-- much more fun than just outright buying a low serial # bill on eBay. image

    Not a bad idea....

Then how about trying Ancient Greek or Ancient Roman coins?

i am failing to see any theme in your collection.

My dad was born in 1929-- my orignal goal was to get one of each cent-dollar from 1929 to present. You're right, it's more of an accumulation than a collection, but I'm very picky-- I'm not out to just fill holes. I still don't own a 1983 P or D Washington Quarter because I simply can't find a gem example of them to match the rest of my Washington set.

No, it's saved online. image And the last big purchase I made there was a lot of '06 three piece Anniversary sets, so there was plenty of excitement watching the hype afterwards.

Interest in coins can wax and wane over time. Don't fight it. If your heart is not into it, move on to something else. You may be back later.

Interest ebbs and flows thoughtout the year I would think for most collectors.....

I have not purchased anything from the mint this year yet and have only purchased a small handful of coin all year so far.....

if you are losing interest in collecting, I understand why when I see what you have accumulated. I was there once do. Consider collecting something that is more difficult (and possibly more enjoyable) to collect. I chose bust half dimes by die marriage and a Dansco 7070. I am enjoying funding current purchases by selling off all of the stuff I accumulated in the past. Date and mint mark collecting was just no fun.

A type set might be in order for you. It will allow you to focus on one type for a period of time, studying up on it, and learning to grade it. Then you can move on to a different type. Instead of buying up a bunch of lower grade items to "fill the holes," allow yourself to save up for one really nice example at a time. Maybe that will help get you going again.
  • Sounds like you're too caught up in what the mint is issuing. Step back, take a deep breath, and think about which ONE series really appeals to you, and concentrate on that. I'm sure you'll soon feel a lot better about collecting.
