Three weeks to get there, and it arrives looking like this.

For the life of me, I can't figure out how the post office can punch a hole in the package like that.

Fortunately, my buyer is a peach. I wish all eBay bidders were as cooperative and understanding as this guy.

At least they care!! Yea right. Was the actual coin damaged? I see the holder is shot but how is the coin. Sorry to see that happen. I dont know how they think putting a sticker on it makes it better. At least the coin still made it.......

I love the WE CARE slogan on the plastic bag that they put that miserably cared for package in.
  • Wow...at least they didn't hit the coin itself. Yikes.
  • I love the "we care" plastic bag. image

I wonder how something like that happens. It almost looks like some tried to steal the coin but they forgot the coin.

    Coin itself is fine.

Yeah, that gave me a bit of a chuckle out of this situation.

Are you going to file a claim? If the coin was unharmed, it probably is not worth the hassle -- just get the coin re-graded.

On damaged stuff, the recipient has to initiate the process on his end because it has to be taken to the local post office for inspection. He hasn't decided yet whether to file a claim or send it to PCGS for reholder. I Expressed Mailed the necessary documentation to him in case he decides on the former. I also told him if he decides on reholder, I'll pick up the tab.

Other than the cost of re-holdering, there probably is not much else you could claim for damages (other than pain and suffering). P.O. insurance claims are a PITA, at least they have been for me in the past.

How nice that they care. Did they also stamp it "Received in Damaged Condition"? I get that every time on auction catalogs that I received from Heritage and Stack's. The Priority Mail envelope is usually in ribbons, but the catalog is usually unharmed. I wish Stack's would stop shipping in torn envelopes.

    We care..............about what?

I once dropped an identically packed parcel from a 60 ft. tower (onto concrete) to show UPS that they could inflict more damage to the package than a 60 ft. drop.

I'm glad the coin was ok.

Now that is customer service! I wish all sellers on eBay would stand behind their product like that. "The Way It Should Be."
  • Was there a shpping label on the mailer or did you mail it at the post office. The damage looks like it got caught in the postage cancelling machine. The pacakage does not look like it was 3/4" thick so this may be the case. Mailers at least 3/4" thick will not fit under the canceling machine.

At least there was something in it! I've gotten some empty, with the we care bag, and a bunch of red stamps that say, delivered damaged and delivered empty...Well, I asked the PO how did you know it was damaged if it was empty? Gal just looked confused...image

It was mailed at the post office and manually processed.

It's more than 3/4" thick. The Safetmailer puts these over the top.

From my experience, a safTmailer in a buble mailer is not enough to meet the 3/4" minimum. I like to wrap the saftmailer in bublewrap before putting it inside the mailer.

I'd suggest you measure it at it's thickest point, (which is the post office criteria), because if you're shipping a slab inside a safetmailer inside a bubble envelope, you're wrong. I've shipped thousands of these.

I worked in mailroom in college they used postal equipment. So I've seeen this before. It happens when the sorter gets a package that is not aligned. The wheels can rip through flesh so sucking and crushing this package is not a problem.

It should have never gone through the machine in the first place. Rookie mistake in the post office.

How much is the coin worth? I'd a waited till he decided what he wanted and used certified mail to get any documents to him.

    Sold for around $350.

    Why?
    .....

Because certified is traceable and a good deal cheaper than express mail. Was speed really of that much essence here? Especially since he didn't even know if he wanted the documents.

Express Mail is also traceable, and I don't care about the costs.

<< <i>Was speed really of that much essence here? >>

Yes it is. If I were in his shoes, I would want the documents as quickly as possible.

<< <i>Especially since he didn't even know if he wanted the documents. >>

He did want the documents. He simply hadn't decided as of today which direction to go. But, it he decides tomorrow that he wants to file a claim, he'll have them in-hand and ready.

The very first coin I ever sold over the internet- in 1996- arrived in the same condition. PCGS slab smashed to pieces, but coin not damaged. I know how this happened, at least in the case of my coin. The mail carrier dropped the package or an entire bag of mail on the ground, and a vehicle ran over it. My package actually had muddy tire tracks on it. Unfortunately, my buyer was impatient and refused to collect the insurance from the post office (??), and blamed me for the "special delivery".

Every single Heritage catalog I receive is damaged to some degree. I think the USPS is using them as frisbees during lunch.

Agreed. Not many would even offer that!
  • I've had this happen to me twice and I don't ship nearly as many coins as you, Russ.
I feel your pain. At least the coin is not damaged.
I had a slab in a #10 envelope and the cardboard packing come completely destroyed. They ran that one through the machine. I sure was disappointed.
I am glad that your buyer is being nice about the whole thing.

I got one like that too, it was mangled the same way and the package was wet and the packing slip was gone but the coin was fine, I did not see how it stayed in the mailer! It looked like a dog chewed the package. I was thinking that I hoped the mailman survived. image

I have shipped the same way and the PO people have had a hard time deciding if it was parcel. They drop it through a slot in cardboard and becuase it just barely go hung up they went parcel but it was pretty close to skipping the parcel designation. Regardless, they didnt need to run it over with a postal service semi.

Any info on the resolution to this yet?

Recently, while speaking to a USPS counter person, she stated that the 3/4 inch thick rule no longer applies since the recent increase. She said that delivery confirmation is now obtainable for completely flat envelopes, which in the past was not so. The point (if this is true) is that you can obtain delivery confirmation on a completely flat envelope without any more protection of the contents of the envelope. Cheaper to ship by anyone's standards without the added cost of packing materials.

Boxes are the way to ship along with added protective contents.

If a sturdy, lightweight slab safe case with a combination were made, would you buy one and use one?

I believe that some times folks at the USPS 'accidentally' pop holes in some of the
boxes. I purchased a lot of coins a while back and when I got them, there was a
hole in the side of the box that looked a lot like yours. Fortunately, the coins had
been wrapped in several thick plastic bags, so none were lost.

This would probably the casual thief, but if someone wanted into it, they could
    do so with tools.

    What do you guys think?

This idea is mine. Copyright and Trademark - David Campbell 6/2007.

I could be called a Slab-Safe(tm) shipping box.
