What causes the toning commonly seen on 1971 Kennedy proofs?

A lot of them seem to display the type of toning seen in this picture. I don't see it very many times in other years. Anyone know what causes this?

I agree with Russ. Using most acid based dips on clad coins will lead to disasters. Often times long after the coin has been slabed.

I hadn't noticed it so much on the '71 Kennedy proofs, but there are some other coins that are nearly always toned or hazy, unless they've been dipped. Try to find a fully brilliant '74-S Proof silver Ike in its original box; they hazed over in just a few years. A couple of cents that are harder to find bright red in their original mint cases are the '70-S and '76-S.

I think it has something to do with the proof set insert from the US mint. Lots of 1970 and 1971 proof sets come toned within the proof set package.

I kind of figured it had something to do with the dipping process.

Would PCGS be willing to crack it out and dip it and reholdered it?

Yes, it is a 68DCAM but it isn't mine. I've just noticed a lot them have that toning.

I'm searching for one in the raw.

Also, some of the Proof sets' seals are not that great and they'll tone as a result of this.

Certain years are notoriously worse than others.

I wish you would have said something sooner. I just sold my PR67DCAM and PR68DCAM. I found them both in $7.00 proof sets. I have another PCGS PR69 that looks CAM to me, but PCGS has said on 2 occasions that its not. I might try again. You can cdertainly find better than the one you pictured.
