  • I see the 2 tone metal on the side and the horizontal markings/scratches instead of vertical. Are those the things to look for on these fake ones?

I also see way too many scratches on the obverse for this to be MS-65, but I'm not a grader so I could be wrong there....

I wonder if that's his 2x2, or if he bought it in that. If he bought it like that, I might believe that he didn't know it's bogus.

c'mon Russ, you can't seriously believe he'd buy it like that. The $550 price tag is an obvious shill for his auction; if he bought it for that (or near that), looks like he is going to lose money. i'd bet five to one odds that he put it in the 2x2 (hey, another self "slabber"!) and assigned the "value" himself.

Now that I've browsed through his other auctions past and present and seen all the cleaned over graded stuff he's fobbed off as problem-free, I conclude that he knows damned well what he's doing.

  • Hey I have a whole box of those "slabs"!

    Where's my dremel?

It is a shame that people do this and cheat people this way. Maybe this seller didn't know, but he (or she) is still responsible for their auction being correct.

What are the odds that this gets pulled?

  • It's hilarious how people give their own coins grades. LOL!

Actually that's what people do. If you can't grade your own coins, how will you know the TPG's got it right or not?

Yeah, nobody but a TPG should be deciding the grade of a coin.

    What?
  • I wasn't questioning the fact that he gave the coin a grade, just the grade that he gave it.

I have an understanding as to how grades are determined but I know it gets very subjective when you need to determine the difference between MS64 and MS65 (for example).

I actually use a microscope to look at the details. You can see a lot at 30x!

in looking at some of his verbage, it is quite telling as to the type of person he is: "All returns are subject to a 20% restocking fee based on the final price of the auction. (This is the only way I can stay in business.) I will only accept your return if the coin is in the original 2x2 that I sent to you. The coin must be in the original condition that it was when I sent it to you."

He has the gall to to put the 'stay in business' quote in there. Man, that is some racket! someone catches onto your game, fine; just charge 'em 20%. get the coin back, and sell it to the next schmuck that comes along for full price.

Buy a book called 'The Official American Numismatic Association Grading Standards for United States Coins'. This will give you a better understanding at how TPG's grade coins.

He has sold numerous smoothies. Watch the feedback fly once people try to have them graded!!
  • If you look at the first Adams out of the two he has for sale, you can clearly see the dremel grind marks!

i've never reported anyone to ebay before now but this guy was told they are fake and he's not pulling them,so maybe ebay will soon....less then 2 hours to go.

after i gave him my two cents, here is his reply:

"Thanks for your concern. I'm taking a closer look into this. I may have to pull the auction. I'm not out to rip anyone off, I will give a full refund to anyone if they end up buying a fake or not genuine coin.

    Thanks,
    Chris "

yeah, he'll take a closer look at how to make more of these, based on the profit margin involved!

WOW! I have to say that i'm shocked. eprey actually listened to us and zapped one! that's okay; no good deed goes unpunished. i'm sure Meg will have someone's job over this one, they lost out on a few bucks in selling fees.
