PCGS Grading Question?

I was talking to a collector friend recently at a coin auction and we were discussing Buffalo Nickels.I told him i had sent some Buffs to PCGS to be graded and was very happy when they came back, but i thought some might have had a shot at being proofs. He asked if i designated them as such on the submission form,i said i checked the grading box and thought whatever they were MS or Proofs they would grade them that way.He said if you designate the coin as a proof and it's not they send it back ungraded.Being new to PCGS and Buff collecting, i just thought whatever the coin was it would be graded and attibuted as such. What's the correct procedure to go by for the next submission?image

I believe I have seen coins come back in a bag with some notation as "Not as described" on them, which may mean that they were listed incorrectly as MS or PF. However, if you are not certain that your Buffalo nickels are MS or PF then I would strongly recommend to you to have someone with some knowledge in the series pre-screen your coins.

Proofs and business strikes are assigned their own unique PCGS coin number. You need to note the correct number on the submission form. Some proof Buffalo nickels can look like business strikes, so if you don't correctly note the number for the proof version you might very well see the coins land in business strike holders.

  • As usual the Forum knows it's stuff. Thanks for the great information.I understand that this series is tough to tell a proof from a business strike,so i'll leave this to better qualified people than I for now.No wonder all the Buffs i sent came back MS,that's what i designated on the form.Live and LEARN.I still think some of them have a shot at proofs so i will get them checked out first then send them back if warranted.
