I think I see what you're referring to, but it looks more like light reflection than anything else. The hat, pole, arm, all look to be reflecting light onto the field.

If it's in plastic, could be the light reflecting off the inside of the plastic to the field too.

LOL, OK, I see it now - yes, her right hand appears to be missing a thumb, or the image makes it look proportionally long next to her index finger

my coin is over 100 years old, and i believe the gold issues came much later, so maybe this is an error they did when they modified the design for the gold issues?
