Have you ever bought 'the holder' vice 'the card' in the holder?

I am working on a 1970 Topps set and need a certain low pop common. It's up on ebay now and has that dreaded tiny black line across the top border. It is graded PSA 8 (NQ). It doesn't become available very often at all. Has anyone else ever bought the holder regardless of the card in the holder? Please advise.................after all, it is "just a common."

In your case, I'm of the opinion that this card is not overgraded but has poor "eye appeal" because of the black line. However, I don't like those lines either, so I would pass on it but I tend to be overly selective.
If this is the last card you need for your set, I'd say go for it and replace it later.
If there are say 10 8s and nothing higher, you may have a long wait for another one to pop up. If you're shooting for an average grade of 8 overall, it might be better to buy a nice looking 7 and offset with a 9. I know the 9s can be relatively cheap. I also know some of the low pop 8 commons can fetch hundreds of bucks so a 7-9 combination is a good choice sometimes.
