Sweet coin.....I can't even afford to open the ebay auction.......
This is a very dumb ass thread. - Laura Sperber - Tuesday January 09, 2007 11:16 AM image

I like the look. As for the date, the coin looks like it is titled in the holder, and the scan is low-end. It might be stronger in person. It might be best to see if you can get the coin on approval or have a dealer associate look at it. I would not buy a coin for $50k via ebay, nor would I pay $2500 to return it if I did not like it.

I myself am more interested in the 1799/8 he has for sale.
  • Restocking fee of $2500 I believe...

    Nice coin though!

I think it's just the photos, but it seems to lack eye appeal. There also appears to be relatively fresh hits on the lettering on the obverse and reverse, particularly the O and E in ONE. The scratch below the N in UNITED doesn't help it much either.

I'd much rather have the Chain in your signature.

Is it just me or does the wear pattern in the hair look strange on that coin???

I suspect it's legit, but wow....I wouldn't be selling a coin like this on eBay!

Maybe the off center strike? Looks like there is no rim on the lower part of the coin.

It really doesn't look XF to me, but I like it anyway.

I, personally, have no problem with it's eye appeal. I think 200+ year old copper is usually a little grungy. I like it.

I like it... except for the weak date. I couldnt see myself paying 50K for a coin that wasnt EVERYTHING I wanted.

Edited to add: I actually like Fletcher's chain better.

Maybe I'll cash in my loose change jug and buy that sucker image
  • Overal nice detail on the main devices. From the photo it appears the weak date could be linked to the obverse die not being parallel when the coin was struck - not entirely wear related . Notice the heavy obverse rim on the upper portion of the coin. Although a nice Chain in it's own right, the "weak" date and some of those heavy hits would be a problem for me with a coin at this price. None-the-less a very nice looking Chain. IMO it's an EAC 30 coin.
  • If the weak date bothers you now, it always will.

  • $49,999, and you still have to pay $15.99 for shipping.... It says first class, but the fine print at the bottom states that all oders over $800 will be sent registered mail..... Still more than the $25,000 registered mail insurance limit,,,,

This is Sheldon-4, the "Periods" variety which is a little scarcer. Coin Values price is $60,000 for this variety. The obverse die was slightly misaligned (tilted) when this one was struck, causing "LIBERTY" on the top of the obverse to be very deeply impressed, while the bottom half of the date is gone, as seen in the photo. However, the top of the date remains and is obvious. I have seen this effect on a few other examples of this particular variety. Again, this is the way the coin was struck, and the bottom was never there even when it was uncirculated; it is not due to wear.

I am definitely not an expert, but seems like seller addresses your concerns in the description. Of course, if you were to spend this kind of money on a coin, hopefully you would know a bit about the coin before you buy to know whether that is true or not.

The eye appeal of the coin certainly makes up for this, and there is little doubt that the coin would have graded AU had the date been fully struck; it is that nice! Fantastic hair detail that shows individual hairs that I didn't even know existed, as most of the ones you see are such a low grade.

Let the gradeflation begin! In 6 months we will see this one in an MS6X RED holder!

Seriously, I think it looks nice and the grade looks right to a noob like me.

    That was my first thought.

It being off-center is not a positive attribute for a Chain Cent. The wear pattern on the hair is wierd and the ear looks like it got smashed. LIBERTY isn't struck up properly either or it's been banged up a little. Weak date, several significant scratches, a rim ding on the reverse, looks like a scrape between the chain and liberty on the reverse.

I do think it's graded properly and the planchet looks pretty good.

I'd have to pass at that level.

I wouldn't pay $50,000 for a coin in an NGC holder.

I wouldn't pay $50,000 for a coin based on those photos.

Instead of betting the farm on one coin, I'd rather buy 50 Morgans in PL or DMPL with low populations in the $1,000 range, and at that price I'd feel better that they were in PCGS or NGC or ANACS holder, provided the coin looks good.
    I brake for ear bars.
