Places to go in Illinois

I live in Freeport, IL which is west of Rockford about 20 miles. I am thining of getting into metal detecting and I am wondering if there are good places in northern IL to start with. There are a lot of older farm houses around here that are adondoned. I would think that they would make good spots. Just looking for some advice.

    Old farms can be good places to hunt, but they can hold a lot of iron trash. My experiance has been hit or miss on farms , but that's pretty much the scenerio everywhere you hunt.
    Researching your area is the key. I would take a look at the digital Sanborn Fire Insurance maps for your area and cross-reference them with a modern map. Here is the login page to the sanborn maps.
    Anyone can login by typing "residence" in the user name box then "welcome" in the password box. Using these maps and brushing up on your local history ( what big events happened where, etc.) may lead you to some great spots.
