ANA BALLOT - WHY ARE CANDIDATES LISTED RANDOMLY?

SteveSteve Posts: 3,312 ✭✭✭
In filling out my ballot today, I note that the 16 candidates for governor are listed randomly rather than the normal alphabetically.

Is this unusual or new for ANA elections?
If this is new, what prompted ANA to do it this way?

I also noted that the directions did NOT specify what kind of "mark" should be placed in the box next to the chosen candidate. I used a checkmark. I assume some used a "X" mark. Others may have just colored in the square. Let's hope all types of "marks" are acceptable.

I believe there is some research suggesting that the order in which candidates are listed affects the number of their votes. But, based on my two ballots (one for me, one for my son) the names seem to be in the same random order. (Tumonis is the upper left candidate; Wolka is the upper right.) I'd have preferred seeing the names randomized in several different ways across different ballots.

    Mark,
My ballot has Rochette top left and Fitts top right. I guess the ballots are really randomly printed in different areas.

For many years now the ANA ballots have been printed in several different orders so that no candidate has an automatic alphabetical advantage. This is a good thing.

  • I finally got my ballot today in Massachusetts.

It appears that the order of candidates are truly random. My ballot lists Schwenker at the top of the left column and Herbert at the top of the right column. I just hope that the vote counters can tabulate the votes accurately.
