The medal was engraved by L. C. Wyon after the portrait bust of Sir J. E. The other figures represent Commerce, The genius of Electricity and Steam, Industry and Agriculture, Science and Letters and Art. Oops... I guess that medal left me speechless in my first post!

Beautiful piece, and I'm glad it's survived in such pristine condition over the decades.

Gorgeous piece! I think that all Queen Victoria pieces are great. Fantastic designers. Why can't we have coins like that today?

Because coins are shrinking and debasing, gone are the days.

Boz kind of off the subject a little but I was viewing your great collection and came across your 1872 Royal Thanksgiving at St. Paul's. I have also got one but couldn't find out much about it. It is much the same condition as yours and it is also has weak strike on the centre of the reverse. Just wondering about its rarity and approximate value if you could help please.
    Cheers,

1872 Royal Thanksgiving at St. Paul's

The Prince of Whales contracted Typhoid fever in 1871 and nearly died. A national thanksgiving day for his recovery was held at St. Paul's in 1872. Several medals where minted to mark the occasion.

This one pictured is undocumented in BHM. Brass 6.5gms 27 mm

The Medal described in British Historical Medals is # 2925, RARITY "RR" The obverse is:

Draped Bust of Prince of Whales facing head turned right./ On the wide border around: HIS ROYAL HINESS THE PRINCE OF WHALES.

Rev is the same as the one pictured above.

Value, Whatever somebody offers at auction, the market is so small and no books available since 1986, it is impossible to tell. Even for the undocumented one.
