FS Nickels How many steps it takes?

I am going to sending to PCGS 20 I think are FS Nickels. If there is a bag mark across the steps still get FS on the slab? Do a min of 5 steps need to make the grade? Please help.
Please don't PM I am still having problems with my computer.
If you would be so kind please email the answers to.

  • The PCGS grading book says full step Jeffs must have "at least five separated steps" with no "major disturbances" including bag marks. I don't know how major a bag mark would have to be to disqualify a coin. I crossed a NGC Jeff to PCGS but it had 6 perfectly unblemished steps. I haven't seen many others.
  • Carl is correct. They will (usually) grade a coin FS if it has one or two marks on the steps. It's hard to say what they consider to be a major disturbance.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I would like to see a step count listed on the slab, or a FS+ designation for coins having, say, 5.75 or 5.9 steps with zero marks.

  • Thank You I will send in only 5 Full steps I have 18 pcs I will hope for the best.
    Thanks again, Rick
  • I would be very careful sending in Jeffs with nicks in the steps. In my opinion most will not cross. It depends if the nick is in one step or cuts across a few. In addition, it depends light vs deep nick. There is a definition of full step within the PCGS "submission status" section under "no grades" that would be helpful to read. Since I don't have any coins in for submission, I can't get to it to copy here.

    Best of luck.

    Here's what it says:

Full Steps (FS) - Jefferson Nickels. MS60 or better, at least five complete steps must appear on Monticello. Any steps that join or fuse together, whether created that way or subsequently damaged, can not be considered for the full steps designation.

ANACS will break down that sixth step for you. I've also heard ANACS listing '5 1/2' steps on their holder? Is this true?

Is the sixth step the one that is below each pillar?

and ngc has changed the number of steps necessary over time. No consensus.
  • braddick, the sixth step is the bottom-most step, often only partially struck up. counting down from the pillars, it is step # 1,2 ,etc.

registry coin, how has ngc's fs designation changed? did they require 6 complete steps at one time? if so, older holders may contain some fs pcs. that are not designated.
