Question for those familiar with 1984/1985 Topps USFL sets.

I picked up a 1984 Topps USFL set recently. It was not advertised as factory sealed and, examining the tape I was not sure as if it was factory sealed or had been resealed. So to be on the safe side, I decided to open it and make certain all the cards were there. The set was complete but I noticed the centering was all over the place with some cards (thankfully the Young and Kelly) being pretty much dead on, with others being 70/30 side to side. The Reggie White rookie had a slight tilt to it and was the only card in the entire set that exhibited this.

I always thought the centering was fairly consistent across these individual boxed sets, meaning that any given set had the same centering, good or bad across the set. This is the first one I opened and was surprised to see the centering all over the map in the same set. To those who have opened these did you find the centering to be consistent across your set(s) or did it vary card to card as mine do? Thanks in advance.

Centering for both my sets (84 and 85) was fairly consistent. However, if yours was cehrry-picked, kind of wierd that the Kelly and Young would be centered nicely.

a friend of mine managed a card store in the 1980's. topps actually put these cards in vending boxes mixed in with the baseball cards from the following year. i know that sounds bizarre and don't ask me why they would do that when they could make factory sets. it is a misnomer that they only came in factory sets though.

Either way, those USFL sets don't come cheap, do they? They must be even rarer than the world famous 1984 Fleer Update set!

The premier edition 1984 boxed set seems to sell for around $150 - $175 for the most part on eBay. This has the Steve Young, Jim Kelly, Reggie White, and Herschel Walker rookies in addition to many lesser sought out rookies. The 1985 boxed set seems to go for around $50 - $75 usually and most notably has the Doug Flutie rookie. They probably do not have much upside at this point with all in The Hall that are most likely going, but then again I do not think they are going to lose much value either. The 1984 set does seem to be a bit steep considering there are plenty of them out there.
