Sober rant

What a load of crizap! Babe Ruth drank beer during games. A significant number of Hall of famers were racists. GAYlord Perry was an admitted cheater-in fact his vaseline/spit angle is cute. Mickey Mantle was a damn drunk who ate greenies..aka speed pills to "sober up" after a night of hot Yankee sex. A significant amount of players in the 1970's snorted mass amounts of snow. Pete Rose bet on baseball. Gooden. Strawberry. Howe. Big Mac. Sammy. The list of idiots goes on and on. If Barry played for YOUR team you would have a different opinion I bet.

NO I would feel the same about barry. I meet him once about 6 years ago and he was a complete a$$. JERK. I will never like him. And this was way before all of this happend.

I wouldn't have a different opinion either. I'm a lifelong 49ers fan and hated Deion Sanders when he was on our team, and hated TO even more when he was there.

I'm also a lifelong Red Sox fan and hate Josh Beckett, even though he's kicking a$$ right now. Oh, and if we would've gotten A-Rod a few years ago, I probably woulda started rooting for the Blue Jays.

But I'm sure there are at least a handful of people out there that really would like Barry if he played for their team...but I'm not one of 'em.

The thing that is rarely mentioned, though, is that we need guys like Barry, Pete, and Selig out there. If there's one thing Americans love to do it's to find someone to ridicule as much as possible. It brings people closer together. Baseball is no different. When Barry retires, someone else will quickly take his place. Probably A-Rod (he's already got a good head start in that department).

Nobody you mentioned took anything that would
change their bodies in a way that would increase their ability to hit home runs.

Bonds cheated on purpose to hit more home runs. Aaron will still be the real home run king!

I wouldn't have a different opion about him either. Bonds has been a first-rate a-hole basically since the day he was born. I mean the guy brings being a jerk to a whole new level, and yes this was WAY before he started sticking needles in his butt. I am just tickled pick that Hank Aaron will be "fishing" when Bonds breaks his record. The true HOF'ers know Bonds for the fraud that he is. Would he have made the HOF if he never took steroids or HGH? Absolutely. But he just couldn't handle Big Mac and Sosa getting all the attention in '98, so he chose to go down a path that will taint his already terrible image forever.

I'm pretty sure Ozzie Smith was on steroids too. Every year he got higher and higher on those backflips.

The country is polarized in many areas these days Mike. Bonds is simply just another topic. No middle ground with him.

If it helps you, I like the way he plays ball.

It's a good thing he could do backflips, cause he sure wasn't a very good hitter. (Did I just say that out loud?) image

I used to like the way he played ball. Hell, steroids or not, the guy crushes the ball and has one of the best power swings in the game. I personally can't stand the guy, I hope he breaks his leg before he breaks the record. While he used to play ball very well (several gold gloves and MVP awards) what he is now, is a shell of a former ballplayer that used to be great who is hurting his team more than helping it, just so he can get the HR record that half the country will boo and hiss at anyway. It's his self-centered, egotistical, maniacal behavior that has everyone hating the guy. And no, I wouldn't cheer for him if he were on the Twinkies.

Sagard, that rant wasn't intended at you, I was merely adding to your comments. image

<<If Barry played for YOUR team you would have a different opinion I bet. >>

Personally speaking, you are 100% wrong. I watched 0 minutes of NBA / NHL playoff action, normally one of my favorite times of the sporting year, because "my" teams chose to employ Chris Webber and Todd Bertuzzi respectively, to go along with the idiots I was already stomaching (Rashweed Wallace and Dominik Hasek). I don't even want to think about the fact that some people were considering bringing Bonds over to wear the old English D.

Overall, you might be correct though. I watched 20,000 Hockeytown "fans" cheer for Todd Bertuzzi in his first game as a Red Wing while they booed Sergi Federov everytime he touched the puck for the opposition in the exact same game, so what do I know.

And we currently have a bunch of people who are creating scenarios that would bring Kobe Bryant to the Pistons. I find it hard to believe that anyone could actually take any satisfaction in winning a championship with a Kobe or a Bonds on their team, I really do. There are certain people on this planet, most notably Bonds, Webber, and TO, that for the life of me I cannot understand how anyone could like them. And I mean anyone. Teammates, coaches, parents, siblings. Anyone. But again, what do I know.

I normally don't get into these Bonds bashing threads, but I gotta argue this one.

The way he plays ball? He is BY FAR the most lackadaisical fielder of ALL TIME (at least for the past few years). He can whine all he wants about his knee hurting, but if he would even JOG for a fly ball every now and then, that'd satisfy most people.

Hitting is only half of what a ball player is supposed to do...which tells me Barry's only giving 50%...while the rest of his team (and the league) are giving 100%.

I couldn't care less if the guy is an a$$ or not, I dont know any ballplayer personally. He was an incredibley gifted baseball player way before he put himself on a fair playing field with the majority of his piers.

You don't think taking 'greenies' for a day game after a night game (something Mike Schmidt admitted to doing quite often) is performance enhancing and helped him hit more home runs?
  • Taking Pain killers to dull the everyday pain just so you would be able to play is a form of performance enhancement while not increasing your ability it enables you to play at that level when normally you could not do so..
  • julen23julen23 Posts: 4,558 ✭✭
performance enhancement is more like popping a blue or snorting a line of levitra, steroids and all that other stuff is nothing more than conjecture and myth, like global warming & women's rights.

That's funny, I fell for the same stuff, when Baseball got popular again after the strike. The summer of 1998, big dudes popping homeruns by the barrel, the juiced ball, more home runs, high scoring games, who cares....anything goes.... it was an exciting time for the game.

Then I realized it was just a scam to win the fans back. It's all about money, that's the bottom line that drives professional sports and college ball too these days. Plus if you can't generate enough interest in a sport legitimately and honestly, you bend a few rules and they know the fans will still flock out to the ballpark, just like cattle.

So I stopped following Baseball completely. My interest in pro Basketball has dimmed too over the years. I haven't followed pro Hockey since 1990. The only sport that I still follow is pro Football. And they have plenty of problems of their own.

I still like the history of sports, like pre 1980 Baseball, the cards, the sports magazines, some memorabilia, etc., but I won't spend a dime on the current game and all that goes with it.

Call me bitter. Maybe I'm just getting too old for all this cheating that goes on and doesn't get punished as inappropriate behavior.

Yeah, well I fell for the scam and am happily falling. It’s a nice distraction from the daily routine of life.

Sure, there are more important things in life to spend my time on, like saving/stopping/preserving the _______, but come on, a Barry Bonds splash down home run into McCovey Cove is far more of a thirll to talk about around the water cooler.
