Your opinions, please-- do you think this coin has Grade-Flation Potential?

This coin is a very low AU grade (in NGC plastic). Even though NGC overgrades every coin by at least one grade level image, do you think this coin has upgrade potential, especially given the current Grade-flation trend? What do you think?

Not in my opinion. The fields on that coin just look low AU to me. So does the wear on the reverse. I am far froma gold expert, though.

Knowing nothing of gold, I would grade it high XF and pay low AU. Reverse kills prospects for higher AU IMHO with nearly flat leg feathers and significant wear on wint feathers.

Attractive coin, exactly what I hope to look for when I set out on a Type Collection. Rob

This is tough... I really like the look of the coin as well as the strike for an O mint 2 1/2. I think it is a quality coin... I think 53 is likely as good as it gets. Having said that, I think the quality of the coin is where there is value and not the TPG grade assigned to it.

While he claims to know nothing of gold, I agree with Rob - wear on the reverse keeps the coin from going higher than 53 IMHO, although they might bump it to 55 since the obverse is so nice and sharply struck for an early New Orleans issue.
