Any way to remove gum from edges of cards?

Hello,

I was going through some more of my 72 Topps baseball to submit to PSA and found that I have one of the toughest cards in the set, Bob Barton IA #40. This is a really nice card with good centering and quite nice corners. It would be almost a sure PSA-8 or maybe even a 9, except for one thing... it has a small remnant of gum on the right edge of the card. There was a little of this gum on the white border as well, but I was able to rub that off pretty easily without damaging the card.

My question is, is there any reasonable way to attempt to remove that gum from the edge of the card without a high risk of damaging it? It's probably no more than 1/4 inch in length. It's not protruding or anything like that but it's definately noticeable. Any idea how this would affect grading if I was unable to remove it? If it can't get at least a 7 in it's current state, it would almost be worth some risk of damage in trying to remove it to be able to get an 8 or 9. Just wanted to see if any of you have encountered this issue and how you've dealt with it.

Thanks!

    VERY GENTLY....

    rub/brush/pass-against the offending edge with a neatly balled-up nylon-stocking.

    SUPER-light pressure ONLY.

Somehwere near a 50/50 chance that you can get most/all of the
gum off without hurting the card.

    Results will vary.

Do what Storm said, but put it inside a ziploc bag and put it in your freezer for an hour first.

OK, I can help you with this. You're going to need 3 cotton balls, some iodine, and 2 oz. of pudding, preferrably butterscotch. You're going to take one of the cottonballs, dip it in the pudding, then lightly spread over the gum. Let sit for 5 hours or until completely dry and caked on. Take the second cottonball, then douse with the iodine, and apply the whole cottonball to the gum. Put a heavy book or even a brick (must weigh at least 10 lbs.) on top of the cottonball, then let sit for 72 hours. Remove the book and cottonball, then place card in freezer for 13 days, after which you can remove the gum simply by wiping away with your finger.

    Glad I could help.

  • Great idea! How about you just leave it.It gives the card character. You could always put the card outside and maybe the ants will eat it off.Good luck with that.
