I have no formal training or otherwise in grading this type, but the pictures make the high points seem polished/cleaned. I had a read that PCGS/NGC makes small cleaning allowances for coins of this age, as most seem to have been cleaned (or at least wiped at some point), so i couldn't really guess what they graded it. I do however think it is a beautiful coin and design overall!

I have recently started looking at crowns. So, I'm not a qualified opinion but I give one non the less. I stayed at a Holiday Inn this weekend (actually true).

I would grade the PCGS holdered coin AU 53- 55 due to some noticable wear and areas of weaker detail.

I would grade the raw coin XF40-45 primarily due to the strike being off center and having less details.

Both are very nice, I need to find one for myself one of these days.

From the pics I think they could be anywhere between 50-63
I'll guess 58 on the first
    and 62 on the second

Edited to add that I'm guessing PCGS was in a forgiving mood on the second image

I'll go with AU58 on the first piece, due to slight wear on the cheek and the crown. The slabbed one is not my cup of tea, however that "green" on the reverse (7 o'clock) looks dangerous.

You have 2 nice talers on your hands! Based on comperable coins in auctions and on eBay (I dont get to see many in person), I would guess the first at AU-50 to AU-53, and the second would grade at MS-61 or MS-62. I am curious to see what PCGS graded the second.

I like the first better than the second. I grade the first in the 55-58 range. I'll just apologize in advance that I do not like the image of the larger one. I have this gut feeling that it likely looks better in hand which makes offering an opinion as to the grade all the more difficult. Likely a high end AU...

MS 62 pcgs on second.....the first is raw. They appear to be different varieties. Notice, front of hair, armour ( or lack of it around arm/bicep) and the ear looks a little different.

What about the "GREEN", man? Is it there, or am I seeing things? That looks like PVC ...... eating your coin!

your not seeing things, I guess pcgs gave this one an exception and slabbed it anyway due to the coin's age

That's not PVC its just good old spot corrosion from an impurity in the silver - common on older pieces and not likely to spread or get worse in any way.
Great Coins by the way! I'd be thrilled with either one.

Thanks for clarification, Joe. Would this be other metals in the alloy reacting with oxygen (copper, for example?)

Copper would be my guess, I have a couple ancients with the same problem. Very vibrant green, almost pretty - Almost image
