The What Football League?

This post will have very limited appeal since many old enough to remember the WFL are probably so senile that they don't and, on the other side of the spectrum, there are plenty of whippersnappers here who were born after the WFL came and went. Still, I am pretty jazzed about picking this up today, especially at around 1/2 the price as the only other one I have seen on eBay in the last 6 months or so.

For some reason I have been wanting to put together a collection of some sort of memorabilia from various football leagues through the years (XFL, CFL, AFL, WLAF, NFLE, USFL, etc.). With so little merchandise being available from the WFL, my initial thought was offical game footballs, but when I saw what the WFL version was going for initially, I backed off that plan. I was about to punk out and go with league logo mini helmets when I saw this on eBay. With the big one out of the way, the rest should be easy and relatively affordable to pick up.

Anyone else out there collect defunct football league stuff? I know there is a pretty big USFL collector base out there and a few others who appear to be going after the 2001 Topps XFL master set such as myself. If anyone has some unusual WFL stuff, I would love to see some pictures.

  • That ball is great. The Detroit franchise of the WFL had a name the team contest. Back in the mid 70s, Detroit led the nation in murders. An old history teacher of mine sent in the Detroit Homicides. Unfortunately, they didn't use it, and went with the Detroit Wheels.

I thank the XFL for two things:

    1) Overhead camera
    2) HE HATE ME

If playing today, no doubt this team would have to be in Cleveland.

  • '75 was the year. I do remember the Detroit team had some major $$$ problems. I can't remeber if they folded before the season ended though. What did they expect playing at EMU's stadiium?image

Hmmm, I really thought it was only around for one season. Maybe the league lasted two, and the Wheels only lasted one? Interesting.

I did some checking the season was from July to November. A 20 game schedule, the Wheels folded after the 74 season with a 1-13 and cancelled their last 6 games.

The "Dickerod." Instead of using a ten-yard chain strung between two sticks for measuring first down yardage, the WFL used a device called the "Dickerod," obstensibly named for its inventor. This was a single stick, roughly ten feet tall, mounted on a base which allowed it to pivot from side to side. The stick was swung down to ground level when a first down was being set, and a marker that slid along the shaft was fixed in place to line up with the nearest gridiron line (the major yard lines spaced every five yards). When that was set, the stick was swung back to the upright position. When a measurement was needed by the officials, the Dickerod was brought out to the ball position, the shaft swung down to ground level, the marker lined up with the nearest gridiron line, and the measurement was taken. (In all other forms of football today, a similar marker is clipped to the standard ten-yard chain, also lining up with a gridiron line.)

i bet a guy invented the dickerod, prolly same guy who invented missles and rockets....

I remember that they also used a mustard colored football with red or orange stripes like this one.

We had the NY Stars here in NY and they played in Downing Stadium on Randalls Island. They lasted 13 games before moving to Charlotte.

Here you go, Stown... He Hate Me Autographed XFL Mini Helmet.. A bargain at any price... below $19.99 apparently. I actually picked one of these up (from this seller for $19.99) and it is actually one of my favorite oddball pieces in spite being one of the lower dollar items I have. It combines the two things I remember most about the ill-fated XFL... the admittedly cool logo and, of course, He Hate Me, or Mr. Me if you're nasty (apologies to Janet Jackson).

Great to see the WFL gettin' some love here in the forums by the way. Keep the WFL memorabilia pictures coming and thanks to all who have posted some already.
