1990 Topps Frank Thomas #414 NNOF....SCAN

What do you think of this card? It seems to be 100% authentic to me and all the lines are solid under a 10X loop.

So here is the story. I went to a small mall card show in Roanoke, VA. It is about 1hr 45mins away. It is only a one day show but it is uaually pretty decent and about 10-12 regulars set up. So I get there and set up and make my rounds. I buy a Jordan Fleer RC PSA 5 for a good price, but that starts me well in the hole for the day. I then see a new guy set up and check out his stuff. He has some nice cards like a Banks RC that is very clean with only one dinged corner and a sweet 54 Mays. He wants nearly book for them though. I then saw the NNOF Thomas and it was the first one I had ever seen in person. Thanks to reading these boards I felt pretty educated on this card so my first thought was "Wow there is a NNOF Thomas!" followed immeadetly by the thought "I bet its counterfeit". I asked to see it and he pulled it from the showcase and I looked it over closely but I was still unsure, but was hoping for a really cheap price that I could gamble on. I asked what he wanted for it and he said "Well, we don't have a Beckett, but it books $450 in Tuff Stuff" So I asked what he wanted for it and he said $450, I thought thats too much to gamble on. I asked where he got the card and his father of about 60 said he had pulled it in a wax box in New England where they were from. I told him that I had wondered what type of product they came out of and he said that the shop he got the box from had produced atleast 3 of them back in 1990. He said that many of them had been distributed in products that went to the NorthEast. How true any of that is I am not sure. I went back to my table and thought about what I read on these boards and called my mom and told her how to check ebay completed items to see if there were any on there. It took her a while but she called back and she managed to pull up the kityoung PSA 8 that is over $650 with 4+days left. So I went back to the guy and asked what the bottom line was. He thought it over and said $350. So now I am thinking, I am gonna buy that card, maybe I can wait him out or atleast get some other cards with it. Then his dad comes over and tells me that he bought a beckett and that it is a $600 card and they are pricing it at $550, but since his son had told me $350 that price stood only to me. I looked at the card a few times over the day and noticed the guy was having a slow show as he was high on most stuff compared to other dealers. Near the end of the day I took a 1990 Topps Ken Griffey Jr. I found and a 10x Loupe that I keep in my car over to his table and looked the card over with the loupe to really chech the printing and make sure it was authentic. As soon as I saw how smooth the line are and the small text was perfect I felt it was legit. Until then I had not REALLY looked at the condition other than to just make sure it had no major flaws. When I had the loupe on it I realized....this is a pretty nice card. I offered $250 and he turned it down, then I said well If I buy for $350 can you throw me in those 2 87 Fleer Bonds RCs? He thought for a min and agreed. I think I might come out alright on the deal.

I am not a PSA member and I was thinking of sending the card to BGS, should I do that or join PSA to submit it to them? If I join PSA the free vouchers say no cards over $500, how do you base that value? Could I submit this card with one of those?

And one last question......Just for fun, what do you think a PSA 10 of this card would go for?

Thanks to everyone on the board who educated me about this card or I would have thought it was a has been card that Beckett has never lowered down from the error cards boom. And I also learned what to look for to verify it to be authentic.

Sure seems like a solid 9 and more than just an outside chance of a 10.
    Very nice indeed.

Sweet card Allen. Is it yours? Get it slabbed immediately. Looks like an easy 9 if not a 10. How's the back?

    CARD NO NAME VARIETY 1-2 3-4 5 6 7 7Q 8 8Q 9 9Q 10 TOTAL
    414 FRANK THOMAS NO NAME ON FRONT 0 4 6 11 23 0 68 0 17 0 0 129
  • I would give it a 8 maybe a 9. Card is tilted and hard to say from the scan but bottom right corner looks funny. Pixels missing from scan or from when card was printed? Not a chance on a 10 with that tilt.
    Nice card though.

That card is definitely not an 8 I-M-O
More like a 9 for sure
Nice grab there Mr. Allen !
I would send it to PSA and hope it goes to a Fan of the card .
From what I see , the corners look fine and the borders are only slightly off, I see no tilt at all .

Best of Luck to you .

Unless it has changed, there is no $ value limit on the freebies.

Card looks like an 8 or a 9 to me. Congrats on the find!

That looks like a solid 8 and a shot at a 9. The slight tilt and possible corner wear (bottom) keeps it definitely from a 10 for sure. But, even at an 8 you can end up doubling your money. So, nice pickup for sure!

The black parts are missing in all the right places (middle left border, Topps logo missing, Thomas' sock faded); it's most likely real; the fakes only omitted the name.

Ahman- Sorry the Jordan isn't for sale but you pick up a PSA 5 on ebay for about $270-$325 depending on eye appeal. I picked this one up for $200 so I was pretty happy.

I sent this card to BGS today at 10 day service. I want to see how they grade it and see the subs, I didn't want to join PSA and still have to pay to grade it since there vouchers would not cover it. A BGS 8.5 brought $900 and a PSA 8 $770 so it seemed like a good idea since BGS is often strong on modern cards. I will see what BGS says and then see if I have a situation that may need some crossing over like Allen Iverson.

Several people have asked me about the status of this card and it is due to pop by Thursday. I went with BGS and I will see how it does, depending on the results I may crack and sub to PSA. Everyone keep your fingers crossed for me on this one.
  • BGS 9 will go huge, probably more than PSA 9 -- but I won't bid on the BGS. image

Don't worry about the card being legit; I can say with 100% certainty it is. And forget about what grade it gets; I'd say just getting it raw for $350 is a steal considering it was up to $1200 at its peak.image

Here is what it say on the membership page for PSA.

<< <i>A voucher for 6 Submissions - 7 Business Day Turnaround (All 6 cards must be submitted at the same time. Maximum value per card allowed is under $500 each.) $105 Value. Tickets, Supersized Cards, T3's and Autographed Cards* are not allowed on this voucher. >>

the last PSA 8 Thomas brought $770 and a BGS 8.5 brought $900 so it seemed like BGS might be a decent way to go on this card.
  • I agree. I think a BGS 9 will certainly bring more than a PSA 9. From a business standpoint on this card, BGS was the wise decision. From a personal one, it was a sad, sad day for yours truly.

3:22 here (2:22) Texas time and still no grades. On the Order status it shows 3 submitted 3 graded so I guess all 3 cards got slabbed. Today is the deadline ship date, I think you get your grades when they send you your shipment info.
  • This is not even my submission and I am more excited about it than I am about my 3 June Subs still sitting at PSA. image

As a major Thomas collector, I can't wait to see how this turns out. When I was 10 a kid offered me a NNOF for $100, this was 1994, I thought that was so much money and I couldn't swing it. I've never had the opportunity since. My Thomas collection is several thousand cards strong, not to mention the 40 or so figurines, multiple coin sets, and miscellaneous items I have, but no NNOF to my credit. Definitely my childhood baseball hero.
