Distances - and stealing bases

It amazes me how the distance between bases (90 feet) worked out so incredibly well. If they were, say, 3 more feet apart, a stolen base would be almost unheard of. As they are arranged now, bases are just the perfect distance apart to make things interesting. I wonder - was there much research done? Maybe I'm too easily amazed, but I am.
