Beckett Monthly vs SMR

Hi, I am going to look at a collection this evening that sounds great. The guy has 6 regular issue Mantles, 12 Aarons, Koufax rookie, 8 Mays etc. It sounds like he is using Beckett to value his cards. I don't want to go in with an SMR in hand, so I was wondering what their format is like and how their mint prices correlate to PSA grades?.

I think both SMR and Beckett have serious flaws in their pricing methodologies/updates.

I much prefer vcp over any of the alternatives.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • What I really want to know is how the prices given in Beckett compare to values listed in SMR. A Beckett nmt/mt is equal to a PSA 6 or 7 or8? What would the vintage cards have to grade to breakeven if I payed full book according to Beckett?
  • I haven't looked at a Beckett in awhile. These are prices from earlier this yr and a very small sample size.

    1960 Mantle $350 $600 SMR $465

    1961 Mantle $350 $600 SMR $415
    1961 Maris $150 $250 SMR $175

I believe these prices are for cards in NrMt condition. If paying full book or top price, you'll need to land 8s to break even or make a little money.
