2007 Awards: Congrats Don Spence, Dave Jacobs and others

Dear Set Registry Members,

With over 28,000 sets registered at the time of the awards deadline,
7,032 more than last year, selecting the final award winners has become
an enourmous challenge for our judges. The Registry is now home to some
of the finest sportscard, non-sports cards, and memorabilia sets ever
assembled. The awards were given to registrants based on, but not
limited to the following criteria: set popularity, difficulty, grade
average, completion percentage, domination, and degree of competition within
the set category.

This year we are proud to announce that Stephen Soloway M.D. and Donald
E. Spence are the inductees into the PSA Collector Hall of Fame. Both
gentlemen, who were honored last year with the collections of the year,
receive our highest honor in 2007.

Congrats to all. It's about time they recognize a modern player set, which represents dedication, tenacity, and networking more than vintage player sets which typically represent huge piles of money. I'm generalizing, I know image

Wow-three good collecting pals of mine had sets put into the Hall of Fame.

Congrats to Marc Schonoen, Anthony Nex and Dave Jacobs.

Also a big congrats to the 5th and 6th inductees into the Hall of Fame--Don Spence and Steve Solloway. I posted here a while ago advocating PSA break their tradition of letting in one inductee per ywear and recognise both of these great collections. Joe Orlando--excellent choice.

Lastly I would like to recognise Bill Bengen for winning collection of the year. Bill has a staggering collection of 50s and 60s non-sports sets and I am pleased he was recognized. Bill is also a first-class guy.

I like how PSA alludes to vintage being 1946-1959, semi-vintage 1960-1971 and modern 1972 on up. Even though I would shift the latter from 1972 to 1973, that makes sense to me.

    Thanks Mike and Anthony,

I think that naming Steve to the HOF is important. It shows that you can have one of the very best collections and it not be high grade.

Steve has a staggering collection and much of it is in mid-grade. Imo, that does not detract at all from the quality of the collection.

Wow-John Basilone is still around??? What do you know!

Allow me to continue the congrats given to Marc. That Schmidt set is something to behold.

Not to leave out any other winners, let me offer each and every person who received accolades for their hard work and dedication a big high five of praise.

Now hopefully by this time next year I will have accumulated the last couple of cards needed for my Munson master set as well as upgrade enough to be considered for such high praise !

Bill Bengen getting the credit he deserves for collection of the year is monumental, considering I think every one of his sets is nonsports.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

I *love* looking at Marc's set. It's simply unthinkable that he's at 100% on a modern master set. Just incredible. In addition, he's got tons of scans. You really should take some time and browse through his set. Here it is. Marc, thanks for sharing your set and the scans!

I do have a question, though: why are two cards listed as being optional?

    Here they are:
1986 SPORTFLICS MIKE SCHMIDT PROTOTYPE-STATISTICS BACK
1988 TETLEY TEA DISCS MIKE SCHMIDT

Are there other master sets with optional cards?

In short, PSA made a policy decision 4-5 months ago whereby new cards added to Master Player sets would be deemed optional so long as the total population of that card graded was less than three. There were many, including myself, who did not necessarily agree with this policy decision, but it is the one that was made.

FWIW -- I do have the Tetley Tea Schmidt in PSA 9 (although it is not on the Registry right now), and it was the first 1988 Tetley tea disc ever graded..

At any rate -- the optional cards discussion can be pretty ridiculous on some of the sets -- think Mickey Mantle, Nolan Ryan, etc. Some cards are just so darn rare that it is hard to envision PSA ever grading three examples of them, so it then becomes a matter of these rare type cards adding no value to a Registry collection, and of course it is not retroactive, either, so if there are singularly-graded cards that are in the current master set composition, they stay there even if only one has been graded, whereas if they would be included now they would go to optional until further examples were graded.

Thanks for everyone who has had kind words to say about my set, I greatly appreciate it. But I really wanted to focus this message on celebrating the fine collections of so many others whom were recognized this year.

Congrats, Dav, on your set as well -- a fabulous accomplishment.

    Cheers
