Wrong on many levels. The Monkeys, the watermelons, ......Im surprised the artist didn't draw them standing in a field of cotton.

    Agreed, very ignorant.
  • I remember a write up of that card back in the late 80's...What is that from?

Edit to add: There is a card out there as well from the 40's or 50's about Jackie Robinson portraying him in a similar fashion, and it mentions his love for fried chicken and watermelon...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

  • Sorry I cant tell what set its from as I need one for my collection. Kinda goes astray from the "adult" section but still in the "shouldnt be" area. Person that fwd me pic said it rarely pops up. Once I get one (if) I'll repost info. Guy said they're usually around $40.

How did they ever get away with that ?
    That is very bizarre .
I wasn't around durring the time of that printing
and MLK's death was a year before my birth , But I would have thought we had come together a little better than that in 63 ?

I'm also surprised Bill Cosby hasn't bought up every single one of them .
  • On a similar note. Did they ever draw the cartoons on the back similar to the actual player or were that all the same white guy?

I like the response from you guys. Classy... This and the Adolph Hitler cards of an earlier time.

Then again it shows the ignorance of our ancestors, "If we forget the past, we're likely to repeat it." may apply.

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

Cards like that have been made every so often because of the ignorant little printing companies out there that look at dollar signs instead of morality...

There was all kinds of issues back in 63. Water fountains and restrooms for whites only, blacks had to give up their seat to white folks on the bus. The list goes on.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

I like how they drew the hands on the cartoon.

One always has to keep in mind the circumstances and time frame that these cards came out in. By today's standards, that card is horrifcally wrong and offensive on many fronts. Back when it came out, there probably wasn't any opposition to it and it was "accepted" by the standards back then. That doesn't make it right on any fronts, but it does explain why it even came to be. During WWII there was a strong hatred towards the Asian population. A lot of things came out that were not right back then, but because of the era we were in it was generally accepted. Today, that type of thing simply is not appropriate. While we may have gotten TOO sensitive over some things, there are still things that we have every right to be upset with.

Remember, back in the early 1900's when the idea of radioactivity was new to the world, people though radioactive items were healthy and good for them and they'd actually drink water with a VERY high radioactivity content. As we got older and matured as a society, however, we learned from our mistakes and now radioactivity is a fearful thing. (Sometimes to a fault as radiation isn't nearly as horrific as it is made out to be).

Still, we need to keep in mind the context behind things and try and understand why it was "acceptable" at the time so that we don't make those same mistakes in the future.
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.
