1974 Topps Stamps Nolan Ryan PSA 10

I just recently sent in a 1974 Topps Stamps Nolan Ryan that came back a PSA 10. It is the only one in existence, with only 4 9's. I haven't received it yet, but it has been mailed from PSA and should be here today or tomorrow. I went ahead and put it on eBay without the scan just to see if it would get any attention. I plan on posting the scan once I receive it. So far, I have had only 2 bids (I guess because there is no pic), but I have a ton of people watching it - I guess they're waiting on me to post the pic. I have had some emails and off-line offers, but want to make sure that I am not selling myself short. Does anybody have any idea of something like this would be worth? There is no SMR on it, but I am sure it is worth quiet a bit! Please help!

I would definitely let the auction run its course, and definitely put up a picture when you can. The only time I have had multiple buy-it-now requests was when I had a low pop PSA 10. It sold for more than 5 times SMR. If I would have ended the auction early, I am sure that I wouldn't have asked for more than 1.5 times SMR. People can be absolutely crazy when trying to fill holes in their registry sets.

I think you made a mistake by putting it up without a scan. Makes you seem kind of shady, like you're selling something that you don't have (which technically, you are). Most people will not bid on anything without a scan.

As for the value, doesn't seem like there's too much demand for this set, but a PSA 10 1/1 Ryan will always have a buyer. if I had to take a guess on what it would end at, I'd say around $250 or so. It's just a guess though, so take it with a grain of salt.

Nothing personal but I hope eBay pulls your auction and reprimands you.

  • Agreed. What if it got lost in the mail? You can't sell something you don't have.

There really was no downside for your waiting to list the item with a scan. By starting it without a scan, you probably turned away numerous collectors who otherwise would have bid and now likely will not revisit the auction.

I would pull the auction and start over when you can get a nice big colorful scan of the card. A 1/1 of a tough Ryan will bring $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Especially that issue which is incredibly tough to get high grades in.

I bet it could bring over 5k with the right marketing and I bet if you let the auction end without a pic you will be lucky to get 1k.

I'll take that bet. No way it brings over 5k. I would be highly, highly surprised if it even approached half that.

I would be surprised if it tops $1000.

    My guess would be $350-$550.

I do not know but I will stick with it bringing over 5k with a pic, but I may be wrong. Rose and Ryan collectors are pretty competitive and if a PSA 10 eck OPC can bring over 5k, I think this can also. But I am saying that only with the right marketing.

I dont understand., Why not wait to put it on ebay, until you recieve the card back from PSA. Whats the hurry?
  • I have already received off line offers of $1500.00 and $1850.00 so you are right - it could bring close to $5K!

Pull the auction! Then email each of the Ryan master set builders that you will be listing this item as soon as it is received from PSA.

Then re-list it correctly, with scans!

    good luck!

If that's the case, sell it off eBay, take a personal check from the highest offer, and then ship it post haste.

Don't worry about a signature confirmation or anything like that; they are all trust worthy.

    Good luck image

I agree I would contact all the top Ryan master set collectors.

I had a 1986 Fleer basketball PSA 10 Checklist that I put up on ebay in May 2005. I got repeated offers to end the auction early for $1500-2000. I declined and the bidding ended at $4750.

So I would say you are much more likely to get $3500-$4500 for the card especially if the offers to end early are from different folks. The folks competing for top end cards really don't care about the money.

You did make a mistake not including a scan but that can be easily rectified.

  • Do you still have the 1974 Topps Stamps Nolan Ryan PSA 10? I was on vacation and didn't see the auction. I collect Ryan's and I'm number one on the Basic and Topps set of Nolan Ryan. My sets are named The Bracken Collection. I'm interested in buying this stamp but don't know if you still have it. Please let me know!!

    Thanks,

Looks like it sold for 1500, probably some money left on the table but also probably a nice profit

Wow. Great price! FWIW I thought carew's $350 estimate was going to be pretty close.

IMO He left quite a bit of money on the table. Still a lot of money but he had an item that was guaranteed to invoke a bidding war. It would have been interesting to see how high the bidding got.

I don't think it would have gone much higher than $1500. Obviously I could be wrong-- I was wrong on my first estimate, so I could be wrong on this one as well-- but cards that aren't part of the basic set usually don't hit the gong level.

In any event, $1500 is a hell of a lot of money for a 1974 stamp. I'm sure the seller is pleased.

Ummmm, if the seller already had offers of $1500 and $1850, why did he sell it for $1500? I'm no math whiz, but I'd rather have $350 than not have $350 because that money can be exchanged for goods and services.

My guess is he pulled the old "I've had offers of xx and xx" and got someone on these boards to bite. Nothin like pullin off the Old Okee-doke.

Why would you do buy-it-now for a unique item like that? Makes no sense. I personally wouldn't pay $15 for it let alone 15 hundo but Ryan collectors likely would. You only need two interested parties to jack that auction up to the sky. I think the seller should go back to Ebay 101 classes. I think it was a very poor run auction. No photo at first, low buy it now, offer to end early for the right price, etc.... I think you could have gotten more letting it run it's course. Could have put a reserve on it if you wanted. Just my 2 cents.
  • Guys, I paid $10.00 for this stamp (raw) on eBay about 6 months ago. I bought it for my Nolan Ryan collection with no intentions of having it graded. When I received it I knew it looked pretty nice, but I just put it with the rest of my Ryan stuff. In March, I was getting some stuff ready for the March PSA special and was looking through my Ryan stuff and decided to send it in. I knew it was nice, but had no idea it would come back a 10! At that point I decided to put it on eBay. Somebody offered me $1500.00 (the $1850.00 offer didn't work out) and I took it. Sure, maybe I left money on the table, but then again it could have sold for a lot less. I'm not a math wizard either, but I know that a $10.00 stamp + $5.00 grading totals $15.00 and I sold it for $1500.00. That's 100X what I have into it. If anybody else can show me where they've ever made 100X their money on a baseball card (or anything for that matter) then perhaps you have earned the right to say that I left money on the table. Otherwise, you don't know what you're talking about. I was happy thinking it was only a $10.00 stamp sitting in my Nolan Ryan box. When I realized I could sell it for $1500.00 I jumped at the opportunity. I can replace it with another $10.00 stamp and be just as happy as I was before, but only $1500.00 RICHER!

    Genuis,

I have 2700+ positive feedback with no negatives so I think you need to go back to Economics 101 and learn what it means to make a 100X ROI.

Realizing $1,500 on a card you purchased raw for $10 is a sweet deal, any way you slice it. Sure, it may have gone higher than $1,500, but that number was quite higher than some of the estimates here before it was bought, so I'd say the seller made out pretty good.

  • Should have let it run it's course I would have paid alot more than $1500. It's a shame you didn't let it go a little bit longer like say almost to the end of the auction instead of pulling it probably after two days of listing it. I don't know about some of you but I don't check eBay everyday to have seen the dang auction. I bet there's several other guys out there like me who didn't even see the auction. The real Ryan Collectors missed out on this one. But, making 100x your money is freaking awesome I would have done the same thing but would have waited to the last day of the auction to pull the plug.

    Sorry I missed the auction,
