1983 Donruss Wax break(scans added)

With all the talk on these boards about ripping vintage wax I decided to jump into the action with a 1983 Donruss wax box break. I ordered from BBCE upon everyone recommendations from these boards.

The box arrived and last night I did some ripping.... I had so much fun and I am addicted again( I have more wax on the way from BBCE as we speak)....

Anyway, I have Question about the 1983 Donruss box, I did not get 1 card of the 3 big rookies (Gwynn, Sandberg, and Boggs).


I did however get a nice Ryan, Ripken , & Rose(probably all 9's with an outside chance at 10) along with other nice star cards (Carlton, Schmidt, Jackson). so I do not believe the box was searched.

Is this normal from a Whole box to not even get one of those rookie cards?

You're talking 540 cards out of 660 in the set. Even with no dupes it's not possible to get every card, so it's not that unusual not to get any of the "big three". Did ya get a second year card of HOF-Elect Cal Ripken at least?

Edit: nm, I saw you did; send it in too, so you can sell it just in time for the "mad rush" that's no doubt going on leading up to his July HOF induction.

Yeah, if 83 Donruss is anything like 84 Donruss (and I think it was from my recollection), the distribution/randomization is pretty wacky. I know in 84 D I ended up with 6 of some superstars/rookies (like Schmidt, Ozzie, Boggs, etc) and only 1 of others (like Mattingly and Murray). With that said, just by the numbers, it is highly unlikely that you would miss all big 3 rookies in an entire box. I'm not insinuating that it was searched, but think of it this way... assuming no duplicates, you have an 82% chance of getting each of those 3 rookies. To not get any of them simply defies the numeric odds. Hopefully, some of the stars/HOFers you got will grade out at 10 to make it worth your while. Still, I imagine a lot of the thrill was in just ripping those packs I wish I could order the very next box from that case, cuz I'd be willing to bet it could have 1-2 each of those cards

Yes, I did get one and it was pretty nice looking card.. I will try and add scans tonight after work.

Yes, I had a great time....
I was thinking the same thing, Wanted to call BBCE and order another box from that case!!!!!!!!!

Personally, I have always been far more pleased with the 1983 vs. 1982. Better color and seemingly better quality control. Best of luck to you!

That ryan got the best chance of seeing a 10, top left corner is a little soft .
