Kennedy Half Specialist – (i.e. Russ)

In my search for Accented Hair 1964 Kennedy proof half dollars I ran across a couple that had the second die type on the obverse and the first die type commonly associated with the Accented Hair variety, are these more common than the Accented variety? Also will PCGS attribute the reverse as Type 1?

I can't answer your question, but I'm glad you asked it. I had always wanted to ask Russ about it, he mentions this die paring on his web page, and wondered exactly what he considers "rather uncommon"


"Something important to note about the reverse diagnostics is that they are not 100% reliable in determining the variety and should not be used as a stand-alone assessment tool. This is because reverse die #1 was also paired with obverse die #2. These are known as the "transitional variety" and, while rather uncommon, they do exist. "

They are actually significantly more scarce than the Accented Hair itself, but they bring little or no premium. And, no, PCGS won't attribute them.
