first poppage 373 cards down 3300 to go... not happy

Every card sent in was opened by me in either wax, cello, vending, rack or set form. VERY dissapointed. They put this 1000 card order into 2 subs...373 cards and 650 cards.. 1 entered 4/7 one entered 4/13. Too disgusted to really talk about how i feel about this sub. Let me know what you guys think. If you need anything, send me a PM with a reasonable offer. Most are available for sale. I thought 90% of the cards in this sub had a LEGITAMATE shot at 10. I dont know why the hell i sent in all those 1992 topps gold. I cannot believe i did not get a single 10 on any of the 85 or 86 football. I cannot believe i did not get a single ten on any of the 85 leaf/donruss. I am happy with 3 cards. (82 ripken 9, 85 elway 9, 80 gretzky 9)
I dont know how i had 17 cards come back evid of trimming. Oh well. Also, i posted a while back offering a free gift for someone who would guess when my grades popped. I have to find the thread to see who was closest to 6/12.

Ugh, I know the feeling. Maybe the other sub got a different grader.

It just makes me sick that i spent so much time opening the product and looking at every corner and it was all for nothing.
56 10s out of 373 cards on a modern submission is just not going to cut it.

There was another recent thread about the "tests" that graders go through before they are hired.

When I see something like this (17 freshly opened cards sent back as evidence of trimming), I feel like PSA should allow the submitter to send the cards back to PSA and have additional graders inspect the cards (without them knowing the cards were rejected). If the cards pass through other graders successfully, the original grader would then have some 'splaining to do. This would be a type of quality assurance exercise and also keep submitters happy.

    Just my 2 cents.

If I spent that much money all at once on grading fees and got those results I think I would email/call joe orlando and ask for a little help, at least on a review of the cards labeled trimmed. Maybe he can check and see if it is a new grader and see if there's a problem.

Makes me scared to send in the sub I'm working on, seeing more and more cards called "trimmed". My last sub had a rejected clemente as trimmed that I pulled from a pack back in the 60s and also 2 autos that were signed in front of me.

PSA needs to fix this soon.

The disturbing thing is that you're seeing less and less "Min Size Req." and more and more "Ev. Trimming". This means PSA is keeping your grading fees rather than giving you a voucher instead. Sometimes pack-fresh cards don't measure up. Fine. Don't give me BS that you think their trimmed if they show no signs of it.

I think the graders tend to get a bit jumpy when they see high grade cards with colored borders. If these cards were from a combination of vending and rack/wax, the size differential may have thrown them off. Still, they should be able to examine the edges under a loupe and determine whether there's any evidence of trimming. I'd either contact Joe or Carol and tell them your concerns regarding the rejects.

Question. Even in the unlikely event that all of these got 10, would it have been worth the enormous grading fees?

is "hobby v investment" the real topic here or what?

1- i can't believe you didn't have more 10s also, that just seems like a lot of quality cards to yield so few
2- what type of grading service did u use? as so many many people have said b4, and i agree, the type of grading service chosen is important and very understated

Yes, if they all got 10s, it would have been worth the grading fees for me.
If 120 came back 10 it would have been worth it for me.

The scary thing about all of this is that i have another 3300 cards coming....

    Oh well..

At least these cards kept me busy for a few months and kept me away from gambling.
All of the money i spent on grading and product wouldnt cover one of my vegas trips.

    I suck at life..

    GG PSA.

That is actually pretty good I think for your first submission. Sorry you didn't get all the grades you wanted and those 1985 Topps are a bummer.

Good luck on the other 3330.

    Mark,

Thanks man. When i originally posted this message I was hoping i would get more responses like this so i would feel a little bit better.

As i mentioned in some other threads, i havent been involved in cards since 1998. When i saw all the registry stuff i decided to step back in the ring.

Now i just need to find the guy making a wally backman psa set so i can get rid of that 1992 topps gold psa 8.

    wtf was i thinking!?!

I agree with that. I've done a submission of similar cards (but nearly that many) and they were a mix of 7-8-9, as I expected.

julen, when you pay to get your cards authenticated and professionally graded, then yes, it becomes something more than putting those cards in a binder, esp. if your intent is to gamble in flipping the cards for a profit.

    Good luck.

I think its great you are spending your time/money on cards/grading rather than in evil Vegas....that place is place of overindulgence, greed, glutton, and evil....the more you stay away from vegas, the better you are...they dont say "what happens in vegas stays in vegas" for nothing....you would be ashamed to let anyone know the details of a week long trip there....

In regards to your first submission....this is PSA, not BGS...you cant expect a lot of 10's.....look at the corner real well, if there is anything close to an imperfection, its a 9....if its something you see within 5 seconds of looking at the corner, it s an 8....

a PSA 10 has PERFECT corners.....yes some PSA 10's may have "slightly-off" centering, but PSA 10 requirements are not 50/50 corners...some imperfection in centering is allowed....

you should have started with a smaller first submission to gauge YOUR grading skills....

i havent checked POP reports, but in some issues, its near-impossible to score a 10 (especially with gold borders)....

i have some Pujols rookies in which the highest grade is a PSA 7.....some issues are tougher than others, dont beat yourself up over non-10 grades....

your eye will improve with time, i say stick with the cards and stay away from the tables cowboy!

I hear what you are saying.

Back in 1998 when grading was getting started i submitted thousands of cards. I had a 9-10year break but this is far from my first submission ever.

Some of the cards were looked through at 4am after HOURS of looking through cards.. i know what to look for .. maybe my vision is getting bad or maybe i was just tired.

    Roger,

Just another "we have all been there with our first PSA submission" post.

I know I have improved with subsequent submissions, but I still miss flaws. When I see the grades pop and scream WTF. Then I get them back in the mail and look closer and tell myself what a dufus for missing something on a card.

The best advice I have read is to evaluate each card at least twice at different times. You may not see something one day but catch it another before you plunk down your money.

Best of luck on your remaining submissions.

I know this is coming a little late, but for future reference I would abstain from grading any of this stuff in the future. Even with PSA 10's there is no margin; you can get most of these cards off the 'bay in PSA 10 holders for $10-$15, which means when you add up the time it takes to break the boxes, pull the cards, inspect them, send them off (I'm guessing it took you almost 40 hrs. just to log all 3400 of these onto submission forms), try to sell them, pay Ebay fees, etc., you end up far, far into the red.

There used to be a small market for low pop PSA 10's for HOFers, but with the shrinking number of registry participants in player sets (or at least a shrinking number that will pay $25 for a PSA 10) and PSA's new rules re: adding cards to a set even that market is done. If you have to gamble with cards start buying high dollar PSA 7's and 8's and go for bump-ups. Otherwise I'd just forget it.

...or go to Las Vegas. Despite what fandango said, at least you can have some real fun while wasting your money out there. All of the effort to go through this (as boo said) doesn't sound like any fun at all and what do you have to show for it? A huge pile of plastic slabs? At least Vegas is much more, how shall I say it, interactive? image

    You are right.

I started this months ago when i saw all these ebay auctions going off for pretty decent #'s and made lots of miscalculations.

    Live and learn.

It was fun, it kept me busy.... No worries.

Maybe i will start my own registry sets...

    << <i>Roger,

Just another "we have all been there with our first PSA submission" post.

I know I have improved with subsequent submissions, but I still miss flaws. When I see the grades pop and scream WTF. Then I get them back in the mail and look closer and tell myself what a dufus for missing something on a card.

The best advice I have read is to evaluate each card at least twice at different times. You may not see something one day but catch it another before you plunk down your money.

Best of luck on your remaining submissions. >>

I would just add that if you have to spend that much effort scrutinizing a card it probably isn't worth submitting in the first place. Let's say you can hit 45% PSA 10's if you pull out the loupe, calipers, micrometers, electromagnetic wave generator, and so forth. If a PSA 10 sells for $15, and a PSA 9 sells for 3$, then 100 cards will gross (45*15)+(55*3), or $840. At first blush that might seem worth it. But of that $840 you will spend $500 in grading fees, another $80 or so in Ebay fees, and another $40 or so in Paypal fees, which brings you down to $200 profit. Now add up all the time you have into the pre-grading, the money you spend on the product, and the time it takes to list and ship all this stuff, and you're looknig at making burger-flipping money; and THAT assumes you can get $15 for each PSA 10 from the 1988 Topps football set, which is by no means a guarantee.

If you're submitting stuff for your own sets then that's one thing. But if you're submitting for resale then the number do not add up; you'd need to hit something like 70% 10's to even consider a move like this, and even with that higher PSA 10 ratio you're looking at spending a ton more in product just to find those cards.

If you've got money to burn then I'd buy a few boxes of '03 Exquisite and see what happens. You'll probably lose your shorts, but at least there's a chance that something good will happen. Grading 80's cards that aren't high profile RC's is akin to playing a slot machine that's only programmed to pay out 5 coins every 6 pulls; your dough disappears, but you don't even get a thrill-- or even a chance at a thrill-- for your buck.

    Again you are right...

But when i search ebay and see a 1992 fleer robin yount sell for $90 and a 1984 topps dwight stephenson sell for $2500 and some 1993 nolan ryan base card sell for $90... I think i am going to send in 3500 cards and make eleventy million dollars( dont forget to put the pinky in the mouth)..

Like i said, I had other problems in my life that still made this worth it for me..

I will probably just list them all in my ebay store at a reasonable price to me and try to sell a card here and there. (the 5-10cent listing fees wont hurt me too much)

The money isnt going to effect my life but ofcourse it would have been nice to make a profit AND live a healthy lifestyle..

LOL! Robin Yount is an entirely different story. The 'rules of the game' do not apply to Robin Yount cards in PSA 10 when the card is needed by two specific Yount collectors. I have sold PSA 10 Robin Yount 1990 Topps stickers for $110+, for instance. But with almost every other player you can name there is either a) nobody really aggressively collecting them (Gwynn, Gary Carter, Eddie Murray), b) only one guy who's prepared to bid aggressively on cards he needs (Puckett, Clemens, Ryan), or c) plenty of guys collecting that player, but no one who wants to pay a significant amount of money for PSA 10's that aren't in the basic set (Ripken, Ozzie Smith). With football you're doomed unless it's a Marino or Montana card that someone really needs.

One caveat; if you can get a hold of PSA 10's of Bonds or A-Rod you can OK if John Woody decides to bid, since that guy is a buying machine. But if you piss him off- which I did--- then the market for those cards is nonexistent.

One other thing, Roger. If you have five figures to kick around consider getting serious about cracking and resubmitting. If you stay away from cards being sold by big dealers (most of them are not in the business of selling undergraded PSA cards) you can make the occasional hit that way. If you can bear to do it learn the modern market inside and out (by modern I mean post-2000), as there are a ton of 21st century cards floating around in BGS and PSA 9 holders that would bump if resubmitted.

This is only 373 cards... roughly 10% of what i have coming in the next 6 weeks.

I will attempt to sell some and get some more grades back before i know anything for sure.

I don't think he likes Las Vegas...Now that the editorial is out of the way, let's carry on...

Sorry that you're so unhappy with the results....

Quick question -- it appears to me (anyway) that perhaps you were focusing more on the corners and not so much on centering. I noticed a lot of qualified 9s in your submission. Could you have been focusing too much on corners and not so much so on the centering issues? I wonder/question if that is why you didn't get more 10s...perhaps the centering was not strong enough to warrant a 10.

Anyway -- you are obviously sick to your stomach, sorry about the results. How many submissions have you made prior to this one?
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Not tryng to rub this in but it appears as an addictive personality type that you sent these hoping the dealer
would deal a you a flush hand. The same gambling energy, looking for the big payoff.

Maybe grading cardboard is not the road to wellness, you seem to be reacting like you "lost it all" at the tables.

Also, you submits that kind of volume on their first sub unless they are looking for big returns or at least the thrill of such?

    Loves me some shiny!

Adding to what Boo said, I think one of the hardest things with grading is avoiding the trap where you submit a lot of cards with a marginal chance of return just to qualify for bulk pricing. I've seen a lot of subs where the submitter received high grades on key cards, but squandered much of the profit on lower value cards in common condition. I've learned that it's better to spend $10-13 per card on cards expected to bring a good hammer price rather than spending $5-6 on cards that are mostly junk. Of course, that requires the ability to nail down the grades at least the majority of time, but that skill will come with experience.

    I think this might be a 1/1:

    360 31794048 1982 TOPPS GOLD 780 EDDIE MURRAY N/A 9

Boo is right. There is a rhyme or reason to things selling for what they do. Pick up on those patterns and you might be able to make some money by grading. Unfortunately the modern/semi-vintage market has been changing so rapidly that once you figure it out, you're stuck with a bunch of stuff you have to break even or take a loss on because it's not in great demand any more.

For instance, a 1987 OPC Bonds RC sold for $900 at the end of April. Over the next few weeks, a lot of unopened 87 OPC material and complete 87 OPC sets were sold. The another OPC Bonds just sold for $600. At this point, it would be fairly stupid to buy up all the unopened 87 OPC you can find, because the price has gone up while the Bonds has gone down. It's only gonna keep coming down, but the $900 pricetag, while fairly high, made sense because everyone is buying Bonds RCs and this is the rarest PSA 10. It's hard to be ahead of the game, but that's what it takes if you want to make money by gambling on cards.
