Nice error

I don't usually collect error but this fits in to my collection nicely. The pervious owner maintains that he picked it out of a junk box about 25 years ago and having shown it to several dealer believes it to be a genuine Royal Mint error. I guess it's only worth the few £s that I paid for it.

Nice coin Gary. It looks like it was struck on a wrong planchet. If so I would guess it to be worth about £50-£70 on eBay. Maybe more depending on whom and how many bidders you had.

I have been having a discussion, short so far, about this coin over on the Pre-decimal forum and concluded that this may be using a Canadian 5c flan as the weight, 4.52g is about right i believe. My question here is. Was 1937 the first year of issue for the dodecagonal Canadian 5c.

Another question, the coin appears to be magnetic and as far as I know cupro-nickel isn't. What is the 5c made of?

The more I look at this the more I'm beginning to think that this coin is not what it first appears to be. I'm starting to come around to the idea that it might be a trial strike done by the royal mint before they sank dies for the 1942 Canadian 5c. Is this likely?
