Counterfeit ANACS Slabs

ScarsdaleCoinScarsdaleCoin Posts: 5,324 ✭✭✭✭✭

This message just came over the wire..... thought I would repost it here... Jon

Warning- Counterfeit ANACS Slabs in U.S. Market now.
We have just found that the Chinese Market is not only making
counterfeited U.S. Coins they are now making legit looking
counterfeit
ANACS Holders with the holograms etc...

If they can reproduce ANACS holders with accuracy I suspect PCGS/NGC
are not to far off if not already being produced. BEWARE as the
Quality of holder is FAR better than the coins..

Thanks for reminding me... I've already noticed it on ebay with those US trade dollars in it being sold over the internet last week.

Great, it wasn't bad enough to have Americans purchasing raw fakes.

I hope this doesn't hurt the hobby.

I guess don't purchase anything out of this country.

I don't see how it can be good for the hobby.

    Jon,

What's this wire? Is this just gossip or from a legitmate source, perhaps ANACS themselves? Are they talking about the old ANACS holder or the new holder or both?

I was trying to be a little optimistic, hopefully the fakes can be easily identified, and the hobby will trudge on.

    It was discussed here earlier:

    Fake ANACS slabs

The auction link is no longer active, which I suppose is a tiny victory in what will be a long war. We discussed the probability of it happening going back at least a year if not more. Strange that it took so long to happen.

Until the TPGs can figure out a fool-proof way to easily prove a slab is genuine, EVERY SLAB SHOULD BE SUSPECT. It's a whole new ball game.

Agreed. This could prove to be very bad for the hobby and crippling for the TPG's if they don't jump on this with a furry.
  • The holograms in those auctions from this weekend looked fake to me.

What would really be bad is counterfeit slabs (not sealed ones) start hitting here. Coins can be cracked out and lower grade coins inserted with the real label. That could really start causing problems!image
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

It's funnny you said that, cuz a few months ago I was at local coin dealers bid board where private individuals put their own coins for sale. I came across a Lincoln cent dated 1924-s in a new PCGS (blue label) graded as a MS 64 RB. The coin itself was actually a AU 50 cleaned. I later found out the owner switch another Lincoln cent and put it in that same holder. I don't know how he could of crack out that coin, but did it perfectly to where the holder seams were located. Then used UV glue to reseal it. The coin look just like a geniunely graded coin too. Talk about doing an amazing feat to try to make a few extra bucks. GEEEZZZZZ !!!!!

BE CAREFULL !!! Don't get ripped...

What really worries me is that fake PCGS or NGC shells hit the USA. Someone take a PCGS MS66 coin, sracks it out and replaces it with a MS65 or MS64 coin. The slab has the real label and is sonicly resealed. The coin can then be resubmitted to get another slab. That is just scary!!!

The way this guy cuts off the tops of the pictures, I wonder if these aren't just pictures of an unrelated slab superimposed over stolen pictures of genuine coins?

    Rob,

How did you learn that? The buyer noticed? The owner was bragging about it?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Online slab verification with images should now be a higher priority.

Not to my knowledge. I'd love to hear if they even are aware of this.
  • I did email links to a number of threads on this topic to Mary Counts yesterday. Hopefully, she has seen them and is looking into this.
Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

    What's this wire?

John is referring to the FACTS network (aka Teletype, wire, etc.) which is part of the dealer-to-dealer Certified Coin Exchange. The Florida dealer that reported it on FACTS is a member here and when I saw his message come over "the wire" I assumed that its basis was the threads on this message board over the weekend. I've not seen anything official and hence my question earlier.

It could be that, or it could be genuine ANACS slabs that have been cracked open, had fake labels added, and were then resealed. I'd love to see how the edge of the holders look.

I received a broadcast email from the moderator of the eBay coin forgery chatroom on Friday.

    Here it is:

    ----------

The eBay user "barnowlc" has sent the following message to the group:
    Coin Forgery <SPAN id=lw_1181589963_0 style="CURSOR: hand; BORDER-BOTTOM: #0066cc 1px dashed; HEIGHT: 1em">eBay</SPAN>

    from: barnowlc
    to: Coin Forgery <SPAN id=lw_1181589963_1 style="CURSOR: hand; BORDER-BOTTOM: #0066cc 1px dashed; HEIGHT: 1em">eBay</SPAN>

Log into <SPAN id=lw_1181589963_2 style="BACKGROUND: none transparent scroll repeat 0% 0%; CURSOR: hand; BORDER-BOTTOM: #0066cc 1px dashed; HEIGHT: 1em">eBay</SPAN> groups and go here
    <FONT color=#003399>http://groups.ebay.com/forum.jspa?forumID=100037392</FONT></SPAN>
To find out more. In my opinion, do not buy any ANACS slabs being
    offered by Chinese registration accounts.
    Alan Van Arsdale

    ------------

It led me to some threads about counterfeit ANACS slabs. From what I have seen over the past few years, Alan Van Arsdale is a crusader against counterfeit coins, especially on ebay. I'm guessing that this is the origin of the buzz about this on the internet.

People concerned about counterfeit & altered coins & slab shoud sign up for that chatroom.

[Sorry about the HTML gibberish above. I'm apparently not smart eenough to cut and paste such things. Anyway, go on to ebay groups and search for the "Coins Forgery eBay" group. I think it is Forum ID # 100037392]

I think ANACS must have received dozens of emails about the fake slabs. I know I sent them one with links to several ebay China listings. So far I haven't had a response.
