Estate Auction Find!!

I live in a pretty small town in Tennessee. I usually scan the estate auction ads to see if anything interesting pops up. A few weeks ago I saw one advertised with tons of antiques and "baseball cards". The auction was this morning. I waded very carefully around the antique furniture, glassware, etc. Then I found it. A huge box with thousands, yes THOUSANDS of cards! 1987-1990 Topps/Donruss/Fleer all in rubber banded stacks.

Oh well.

Yes, but rubber banded cards are rare for those years. Perhaps fifty years from now these genuine slabbed rubber band indented cards will be worth a fortune.
  • As bad as that sounds it could be true.. There are several collectibles that are worth more used than new.
  • I went to an estate auction last weekend. They advertised baseball cards also. I go and check out the cards and they had 5 monster boxes full of late 80's- to mid 90's junk. I ended up buying a copier box with five binders full of cards in it. One binder was full of early 90's basketball & one of non sports junk, one mixed with Proline and Proset football. There were two binders left in the box and they were the reason I bought the whole box. One binder was filled with 1970 Topps football and the other binder was half full of 1970 Topps football with about 50 Topps football cards from 1969 to 1972, the rest of that binder was filled with Proset cards. Also in that binder was one page between the Proset cards with 5 1910 t-218 champions cards. I paid $65.00 for the whole box and came away with about (340) 1970 Topps football cards all in about ex to exmt condition, perfect for a set builder such as myself.

    Thanks for letting me share.

I went to check out some baseball cards my friend called " Really Old " today .
Man, I was all excited about it all day yesterday and I woke up all excited and lit up with anticipation !

I got there and he shows me the binder of cards . . . All Crap !
Just a Bunch of 1973 topps, pretty bad shape I'd rate a 5 or less and a bunch of 1975's in about the same shape . . . .
I still bought them from him though, cause I'm a sucker like that .
    20 bucks I paid .
I did buy a really nice Sword though , made in Spain , the thing is incredibly heavy too , like a knights sword or something .
  • I bet that you were excited before you got to the sale.

Its kinda like buying a lottery ticket. You pay $1 for the right to have dellusions of what you would do if you won.

Yeah, nothing like having the rubber bands being worth more than the cards.

I can only assume that you said "oh well" since, just as you were about to pull out your wallet, a Tri Star representative swooped in and stole the lot from you in order to put together more quality "Hidden Gem" boxes for Orange to wax poetic about, yes?

  • andywtn-5 1910 cards !! nice.

Leiascards-too bad that doesnt apply to cards. I buy packs and nowdays Im afraid to touch the cards and its always a bummer to pull that good card and its dinged.

elsnorto- Hidden Gems rules. I sold my FF collection and bought 4 boxes. My banner tommow will have a 1988 Topps Ellis Burks,1987 Topps Devon White and if Im lucky a 1988 Topps Wade Boggs All Star Card. I mean, you know a card is rare/special when someone in a 3rd world country doesnt have it.
