Would you have the discipline to be a 4 Sharp Corners or a dslsports?

If you were suddenly made owner of 4 sharp corners or dslsports or a similar outfit, would you have the ability to part with all those PSA 10's? I'm guessing these guys realize they're not going to make a living selling the PSA 9's, but darn it would be hard not to start "collecting" the PSA 10's for yourself. It would be interesting to see what kind of registries these guys could have if they saved 1 copy of each PSA 10 they have sold over the years.

On a related topic, a while back I had the opportunity to meet Chris Porter, formerly of Superior Sports Cards and Leland's. After seeing some of the cards he had gathered for an upcoming auction, I mentioned to him that he must have an amazing collection himself. He told me he had about 3 game used bats (nobody really special) and that was it. He said it was hard to make a living selling cards if you can't part with them. That might explain why I'm not making a living selling cards. . . image

  • I do not get attached to any card I own to a point I would never sell it. I have a nice collection, but nothing it not for sale for the right price. Its just cardboard after all.

The collectible biz is about buying/selling.

If you cannot sell, you are a customer of the biz.

I have never bought anything that I would not sell.
I get to play with the stuff, while I own it; then, I
sell it to get more money to buy more stuff to play
    with and sell.

Last I heard, he was with another major auction house, but he was in charge of the comic book division, of all things. Apparently this (comic books) is his real passion.

Any idea on the annual revenue of DSL or 4SC?

I remember in the 90's being in awe of the Baseball Card Kid's model or Superior Sports or these guys that were doing a few million a year in revenue, on a 10-20-30% margin or whatever it was. Turning a passion into a real thriving business.

Imagine being Mastro or REA and all the stuff that goes through your hands!

That is a great question. I will add to that question.

When do they get the time to go through them all the cards to submit and give it a good hard look to get a 9 or 10 and then scan them all?

I am betting that 4sc submits at least 20,000 cards a month considering they always have at least 5,000 auctions going.

Can you imagine the amount of cards they have to go through? 100,000? 200,000? 500,000? cards in a month.

That is a lot of cards. Then the time it takes to package them all up. Holy shi*t that is a lot of time spent with cards image

I have heard that 4SC stuff mostly comes from a big wholesaler that had tons left over product dating back to the 70s and is letting them have it for a great price since they basically bought it all. When your talking about a wharehouse full of unopened cards it would take some years to go through it all.

  • ... but you'd have to look yourself in the mirror knowing that the only reason some were graded 10 was because you were a big submitter. Oh, to have to live with that knowledge.

  • DSL Item . . . $700 right now. Noticeble tilt.

  • and a small imperfection on left border of card . . . where colors meet.

    Tilt-A-Whirl.

I'd send that back hoping for an 8.

The 76 Robinson card is tilted in the holder. A PSA 8 on that one? You must be joking. Don't see any noticeable tilt on the 75 card, not sure what you're seeing there, either. That card is centered virtually perfectly all around, and that is TOUGH with those mins. Eye appeal on both cards may not be top-notch for PSA 10s, but they certainly aren't problem cards by any means. Any one of us would be hoping for a PSA 10 on either of those cards, too.

i have no problem buying an o/c mini that is a psa 9 o/c, especially when o/c is occuring on the back of the card, not the front.

i personally like the bailey card myself, there are much worse examples of psa 10 quality stuff the aforementioned seller's have pushed into the e-bay world over the years than this.

I wonder what they do with all the left overs?

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

  • Ive gotten 10s on worse cards then those shown. they get more sliders because they send in more cards. that is not saying that if they have a problem they may be able to get it handled where you or i would probably get the runaround.

They sell them through their other outlet. Newenglandsportscards (NESC for short) image

They do bust a lot of vending but they buy up NM+ sets at shows and such as well. I have a couple local dealers that have sold them sets. He said they paid his full asking price, no questions asked on a 57 T football set. He thought he was high on it but wanted some room to move and they looked it over, and gave him the cash. He then asked what they planned to do with and they told him right up front they were 4SC and would break it up, grade the good stuff and sell it.
  • I agree the Robinson is just moved in the holder, I have seen 10s look alot worse than those cards before.

I wonder how much 4SC pays per-card in submission fees.

I would close the shop and retire. Keeping all the cards
  • colebearcolebear Posts: 886 ✭✭

    1,000 cards=$5/card
    2,000 cards=$4/card

so I am guessing 20,000 cards for $2-3

PSA also has a Letter of intent you can sign to say you will submit a certain amount (say 20,000) of cards over the next year and they will discount your rate all the way through even if you do not submit at the same time. Then if you do not follow through, they will adjust the price for the cards you did not submit
