"LB" Helvetia

This coin

B for Bern, and L indicates minting from 1945 through 1947, but can anyone tell me what the L actually stands for? You probably already know that the 22 stars on the edge represent the number of cantons at that time.... When did the other 4 come in?

Your link isn't working, but I presume it's a 20 franc gold Helvetia dated 1935 with an "L" to the left and a "B" to the right of the date.

I'm not sure what the "L" stands for, but it is highly suspected that the gold for these coins was obtained from the Nazis, who obtained it from Jews on their way to be gassed. The Swiss pretty much admitted to this chicanery back in 1996. For this reason, I personally refuse to trade in 1935-LB, and any post-WWII dated Swiss gold coins.
  • Thank you for that depressing, if not altogether surprising, news, MacCrimmon. I'll try to find out more about that.
