Set Registry incomplete sets ranked higher than complete sets??

How come incomplete sets are ranked higher than some complete sets on the registry? A complete set graded all PSA 6 will be lower than a near set of PSA 7 and 8s. Isn't the whole idea of the set registry to complete sets? I think all complete sets should be ranked higher than better graded incomplete sets. Anyone else noticed this before?
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

A set is ranked by the total number of set points a person has accrued. For simplicity's sake, let's say every card in each set gets one point per level of grade for each card. Thus, a person with a PSA 8 card would get two points more than someone holding a PSA 6 of the same card.

It's easy to see how the person with the PSA 8 set at 80% complete would have more points than someone holding a PSA 6 set at 100% complete.

And as for the relative fairness, I think PSA has it spot on. It's SO much easier throwing together a set at a lower grade than it is a higher one. So the person with the higher graded cards deserves to be ranked ahead. Simply put, their cards are better. (Probably).

There's no reason to penalize someone who's chosen not to fill out a few missing holes with some low graded stuff that doesn't fit the overall set quality, just so they are at 100%.

Wait, wait, let me guess-- you have a complete set.

The set that ranks the highest should be the one that's worth the most money-- and that tends to be the one with the best grade point.

I can see your argument, but it can be equally unfair from the opposite perspective. What if you have an incredible high grade set, that is far and away better than every other registered set, but you're missing one card? If complete sets are rated higher than all incomplete ones, your set may be far down on the list.

Also, I would disagree that the purpose of the registry is to complete sets. The registry is a means by which PSA can increase interest in their product and generate revenue. (Not that there's anything wrong with that. I like it.) People like to compete and be at the top of the registry. There are 2 obvious ways to improve your standing in the system as it is: Increase the grades on the cards you have, or obtain new ones, either through submissions or purchases. Either way, it gets more submissions in PSA's door and increases competition, which continues the process.

  • I think that the way the point system works is the right way. I had a 33 goudey set that was 93% complete with a 3+ grade and would never expect to complete ( or be mentioned) with some of the 6+ graded partial sets with all the big names (ruth, foxx, etc.). I think that they have the right idea by rewarding people with 90% + sets by keeping them on the finest lists forever. Because no matter what set is being completed, to achieve 90% is a feat in its self!

    Just my 2 cents!
