  • Maybe if he gets 3000 hits.

Only if he regained the power he had earlier in his career. Good player, but not HOF.

Yeah, just don't see him in the Hall. 2 batting titles were nice, but that's about all he's got goin' for him. Now if he were to get to 3,000...

I dont know why I say this but does anyone other than me see Nomar retiring in a few years? I dont think he will even get to 3000 hits.

He's turning 34 next month, he's probably the worst-hitting first baseman in the major leagues, and he's barely halfway there; why is the possibility of him getting 3,000 hits even being considered? I'll be surprised if he gets to 2,000.
This is for you @thisistheshow - Jim Rice was actually a pretty good player.

    Nope, he's not.
  • 6 decent seasons in 11 years. Career numbers are subpar. Injury-prone, aging, and declining fast. 1 homerun so far this year. Just 1. If he were second-rate and performing at this level, he might be able to negotiate a few more seasons. Considering the money LA spent, they will want to deal him or toss him ASAP, and his price will go way down (assuming a club will want him), and that will be a huge embarassment for him--a decision most players make facing this is retirement. He never really had power--Fenway was his power. He should have stayed in Boston.

his attitude and "commitment" got him traded. No way he will deserve to be in the HOF.

Barndog hit the nail as far his departure from Boston went, he was on his own page and that was that. Good riddance to him at the time but I dont harbor any bad feelings on him but again he will not even come close to 3000 hits let alone the HOF.

I didnt suggest he had a choice in the matter. What I am saying is that the 300 foot kiddie fence green monster makes a homerun hitter out of the most dismal, lackluster loser if they hit the ball in the right spot. He goes from being a 35 homer guy to a 1 homer guy--it's the ballpark that made him great (or, the ballpark that made him horrible). It's not just his aging decline/injuries.

I actually believe we will see Nomar on the stage on induction day...when Mia is inducted into the SHOF.

Based on his career stats overall (remember, first thing I look for when sizing up HOF candidates), he's still several years away (he's just over halfway to those 3000 hits). And him getting hurt for most of last season, not a good sign. After all, isn't that the main reason Canseco didn't even come close to making it even though in the end he (somehow) ended his career with 467 taters?

Well he's going into the Red Sox HOF this year! Of course that's not the Hall of Fame...no offense to my wife (who's a big time Nomar fan) but while his .313 BA is no doubt pretty good, I don't see a meager 1747 hits and 936 RBI's really adding up to any serious HOF contention. Sorry.

He had a few very strong seasons but when he ended his career he faded quickly. Too bad. Nice player in his prime.

Very valid point Larry. I will approve of Nomar Garciaparra being inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame only after Don Mattingly is inducted.
