As part of a project in middle school, I did a report on the Crater of Diamonds State Park. When we went to Texas that following summer, my mom decided to surprise me and take me there on the way home.
They say on average 2 are found a day. I was only there for 2-3 hours, as the sun was setting, but it was neat to see.
You pay a $5 fee, and you keep whatever you find (might be more then $5 now.) You take what you find to the center, and they will certify a diamond that you find. Its just looks like plowed farm land... but it produces some pretty sweet things. I definately wouldnt mind going back out there again.

Sounds like an ideal vacation spot. Dirt...treasure... what else does one need?
