Sorry if it was posted already.

This is one paragraph out of the story - see the link for more.

"A $5 gold piece and a silver dollar, both depicting Jamestown symbols, make up each commemorative coin set. When returned from space, NASA will present one set to Virginia Governor Tim Kaine for display at Jamestown Settlement, a 17th century living history museum. The second set will be displayed at the National Park Service's Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center."

Not a lot of coins in space fans huh? I just had a scary thought...

First we had the dozen gold sacagawea dollars taken to space on the space shuttle in '99. Although I think the biggest draw of these ones are the gold content, they are still quite unique.

The article above is two commemorative sets - but they already have a home when they get back from space.

Here is the scary part. With the privitization of space travel getting closer and closer, and other countries needing funds for their space programs, how much longer until we see a couple of mint bags of coins (or any amount really) taken into space, and upon return get slabbed and sold at crazy prices? Think we'll see it?

There was already a forum member who took some wheaties into space and gave them away.
JoeFro....he sent my son some of them along with a letter stating what he did. It will be cool and a cool talking point for my son as he goes through school with these and show&tells, etc.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Can anyone explain this "trip" into space with coins ? What's this about ?

  • Remember the movie "The Right Stuff"??

Gus Grissom took souveneirs into space with him to try and cash in on the inevitable collector's market. He had a roll of dimes and some salt-and-pepper shakers shaped like mercury capsules.

Other astronauts have done similar things and each astronaut has been allowed to take "personal items". In the Gemini program, one of the astronauts took a ham sandwich in his personal stash. When he tried to eat it, breadcrumbs filled the interior due to near-zero gravity. NASA changed the policy and from then on, had to approve the personal items taken. Many of the astronauts stuck with coins, whcih are pretty much always approved.

There is a thriving market right now in "flown" space memorabilia.

  • PCGS officials have been sent to the landing site to open the door of the shuttle. They can now verify and slab these coins as "First to Space" if the coins are handed to these officials before departure. I'll post the eBay listing for these unique and interesting "artifacts" very soon. image

Almost forgot about JoeFro's vomit comit science experiment. That was at least for a valid reason. The astronauts taking souvenirs up like ABSilvercoins mentioned is a little different too.

I'm talking about any unnamed TPG calling Russia's space program, NASA, or Virgin Galactic and saying hey - take these 30 mint bags of quarters (Florida perhaps for the space theme) into space and back and we'll give you 750k or whatever. That's 30,000 quarters. Call them "First Orbit" and sell them at $69.99 each for just about 2.1 million bucks gross. Would still net you over a million dollars when it's done image
