What's up with the value of certification numbers starting 0XXXXXXX

I have watched quite a few of auction's on Ebay over the last few month's. It seems to me that there are lots of graded cards with the certification numbers starting with 0XXXXXXX up for auction lately. Most of them have high grades even some with the highest grade for that particular card. For some reason it seams that the cards reflect a lower grading standard as compared to cards starting with certification numbers 4XXXXXXX or 8XXXXXXX. What are your thoughts,
Thanks, Paul

I've been saying this for years. Heres the deal . . . all the old graded PSA cards that were graded under lower standards began with the # 0, so what happened was all the old collectors that hepled PSA get off the ground wound up with a bunch of cards that no one else wanted so apparently PSA responded to the issue by starting to grade under the new, more rigirous standards with that same # 0 in hopes of confusing people and making those original collectors have a higher sense of value for their collections which everyone who knows anything clearly knows to stay away from as they are a grade or two above what they should actually be. It is easy to tell the old graded cards from the new ones by the darker font on the front, the trick is a lot of that old junk is being reholdered in hopes that people can't distinguish the difference. It's pretty simple to tell, just look at the quality of the cards that start with # 0 and you can determine which have been re holdered. As far as the old flips go, avoid like the plague! All the old timers will fight this theory because they have everything to lose as they are having a very difficult time moving those old graded cards in a market that has become much more knowledgeable.image

If you feel that the cert. number is cursed, go to PSA and have them reholder the card with a new flip. The curse is gone.

60toppsguy , here we go again, how long are you going to be bitter. most of the 0 certs selling these days are cards that were recently graded. as for the old certs that he is referring to , here are a couple of my overgraded "0" cert numbers that 60toppsguy refers to. good thing they were graded way back or I would have been stuck with 5'simage

Some of my nicest cards have/had certs that started with 0. And as david has said PSA has recently used a cert that started with 0.

    Good for you.

I agree with Steve. I have many of both the older 0******* cards and the more recently graded cards. If anything, the grading standards were more strict with the older graded cards than they are now.

I agree with with Russell and Steve. I have no problem buying a cert starting with a zero. I think it is pretty bad when all of us are paying for a service to verify the grade/authenticity of a card and later down the road someone questions the value of a card because of the numbering of certification. Ludicrous!

I agree as well. I was submitting back in the 0XXXX and back flip hologram days and some of those submissions were during the 'grader of death" reign. I'm a little more cautious of the very old flips that used a very different font but I don't have any issues with the late 90s graded cards. Also, they were very stingy handing out 10s on early/mid 70s cards in that era. If I resubmitted my 9s from the 0XXX holders, I bet some would come back 10s today. The PSA 10 populations have really soared since they converted to the >1XXX flips. 1974 baseball is a prime example.

think what you wish, although that is a nice looking olderd graded ROSE rookie! prove me to be wrong, b ut I think more times than not, it's not the case . . . It hard to tell with the 1968's unless you post the scan of the back, would you do that?

Count me in as agreeing with all here. You cannot generalize on condition based on the serial number on the card.

there is nothing wrong with the back of the ryan, it is in my safe box otherwise I would post a scan , if the card was not a gift from my wife I would have cracked it out already as it is an easy 8 based on current grading. I have many more examples and I am sure others do. I can give you many examples of recently graded cards that look like crap. in all eras there are good and bad but for the most part the grading is accurate

I agree good and bad at both ends whether it was graded in 1989 or 2007, just got a PSA 7 should be a 5 or 6 another PSA 7 cracked it out and resubmitted it came back a 9. that is why when I get ready to submit some cards, I look at them on monday, then again on wensday and then again on friday with a 10X loop (all 3 days), usually my 150 card sub is now about 90-110 card sub. The graders at PSA I am guessing look at your cards 1 time and that's it, some cards get undergraded and some get overgraded. Be happy with the overgraded and resub the undergraded. Grading is not a perfect system (subjective) and never will be.

I think the original point of the thread was that the newly graded "0" serial numbered cards were overgraded and has caused the populations to soar on 9's and 10's. The old "0" cert theory is not the right theory. Hologram holdered cards were perceived as being cards that may have issues. Not all of them have "0" numbered certs. I don't buy into it, if you buy the card not the holder you never will be disappointed.

  • I have much more confidence in the original 0 numbered cards being unaltered. Just my opinion.
  • I saw this one tonight and remmebered this thread because the cert# begins w/ a 0.

Hopefully this link will work. Check out the 2 left corners of this card, it seems like there's a smudge covering the corners. This isn't the only card this seller has on Ebay with the same issue on the corners.

    Maybe it's just me.

Seemed strange to me that it looked like the corners weren't clear. The item they sold right after that (a Bob Miller card from 1960) had the same problem. Then I noticed both items had cert #s that began with a 0.

Did their scan look weird to you?
