2007 Topps Series 2 Is Out

Dunno if there's a thread talking about this. If so it didn't turn up in the search. If there is, please link to it.

I went to the only store in town that sells 'em and picked up 10 packs.

There's some new cards - Opening Day, The Streak (Joe DiMaggio's), Trading Places (traded cards), holo cards "Stars" and "Hit Parade" - plus I pulled Stan The Man's Distinguished Service.

Also landed A-Rod and KG jr's regular cards - not bad.

Overall I'm a big fan of this year's cards. Although I collect "vintage" 67-78, I decided to do this year because of the Cardinals winning the WS last year. They are beautiful.

Crap, there goes all of my money.
  • If anybody gets a base set together and wants to sell, let me know, I spent too much on the series one boxes so I'm not going to open these.
  • Wonder if anybody has found the A-Rod card with Dick Chaney in the background???

I just bought a hobby box of Series 2 and a complete set of Red-Backed Series 2 cards. (God bless sniping). After my Series 1 experience I'll wait a while before going after insert sets and wait for everyone else to blow a fortune putting them together. Then, when supply FAAAAAAAAAAAAAR exceeds demand I'll pick them up cheap. image

The Series 2 box should arrive tomorrow, and that will ensure I have an unopened pack for Series 2 as well as most of the base set and quite a few inserts. Hopefully I get something nice in there that I can trade/sell and recoup my purchase price.
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

My Hobby Box of 2007 Topps Series 2 arrived today, and I must say that the sorting they have done in these packs is fantastic. I opened up all but one pack (the one that is part of my pack collection) and got ONE duplicate. That's right, ONE! Granted, all of my Red-Backs are technically duplicates since I picked up a complete set of them a day or two ago, but that's still amazing.

I wound up getting 70% of the base cards in the set and need a mere 97 more to have it complete. I also got a very nice array of inserts so I'm pretty happy. No autographs or relics, but at least there was a nice variety of cards. (Got the red and regular version of the Matsuzaka rookie. Too bad I didn't get a Bonds card or the Japanese variation of Matsuzaka's).

Out of 10 packs I got 3 dupes. Nice mix for my first 100 cards.
  • have the print runs of the high level inserts been publicized yet?

I'm not even sure how many different insert or parallel sets there are. I'll probably wait until a month or so before the Highlights/Updates series comes out before really having a good idea about this. For Series 1, there were a LOT of different insert sets that really weren't mentioned on any checklists or publications from Topps. It was only through Beckett.com that I found out about them.

For Series 2, I know they have the Red Back Parallels, but I am also hearing of an "autograph-less" parallel. I honestly don't know if these are an actual parallel (where it's just like the regular card but without the autograph on it) or if it's another printing error by Topps. I'm inclined to think that it's a printing error.

In addition, Barry Bonds is in there as card #661 which is apparently very short-printed and I wonder if there is an even shorter printed red-back variation on that. Only time will tell.

In regards to planned card variations, the only one I know of right now is Dice-K Matsuzaka's Japanese parallel where the text is in Japanese characters as opposed to English.

  • i am mainly wondering about the print run of the pujols autograph. i pulled one from series 1 and there were only 25 (i think beckett stated that from topps). i already see 3 of the series 2 autos on ebay...

Picked up 5 more packs today and got the Bonds #661.
Dunno if I'm just lucky or if this is NOT an SP - but glad I did anyway.

Noticed that the KC team card doesn't show the team - just the empty diamond in the stadium. Weird.

Plus I got another Joe Dimaggio card. Quite a nice card - looks like something Knuckles would have done (honestly - his designs are better than most of the "pro" cards).

I also got a Mantle card in which he's wearing a suit and holding a 7 ball. Dunno what that's about...

Nice find on the Bonds card. I haven't seen many of them available on E-Bay, and almost none offered in the "hand-collated complete Series 2 Sets".

The Mantle card is part of the Series 2 Mickey Mantle Story insert set. While Series 1 used the 1952 Topps design, Series 2 is using the 1953 Topps design.

My Walmart still doesn't have any of the packsimage My card shop only has hobby packs but I could care less about any of the insert sets and just want to buy the rack packs that only have the base cards. Oh well, guess I'll have to deal with a late start this time.

2 hobby boxes left me needing 1 card for the base whiteback set (didn't get the Bonds card or the Dice-K Jap card though) But one of the redback cards was card the one I needed.

Did get 2 Dice-k whitebacks and 1 redback from 1 box. I like the inserts. A lot of packs had 2 in them.

Still have another box to crack this morning image

I got 3 1st Edition cards. What exactly are those? I assume they are from the first print run but how rare are they and why aren't they numbered?

The more I look at that Mantle, the less I like it.
Why did they make a baseball card of the baseball legend wearing a suit and holding a billiard ball with a goofy look on his face?

And what's with the distinguished service series. Pictures of ball players in military uniforms is one thing, but I just nabbed Charles DeGaulle.

The 1st Edition cards are the first print run of cards for the series. They are sorted at a rate of 1 per 36 packs, so on average you get one per hobby box.

Today I went to Target to pick up some household equipment and quickly stopped by the card section. They had just put out retail boxes of 2007 Topps Series 2 and the bonus boxes. So I picked up one 24-pack retail box and one 9-pack bonus box. I got a bunch of the Williams inserts, a Frank Thomas Trading Places Relic Card, and now am only 39 cards short of the base set. I was able to get the Bonds SP out of the bonus box, and I also see that Beckett has updated their 2007 Topps listing with the new cards from Series 2. No pricing yet, but at least the checklist is out. I'll need to go and pick up some Wal-Mart bonus boxes since they've extended their "special" insert series as well.

I think I'll start a needs/wants list for 2007 Topps Series 2 over in the B/S/T forum once I tabulate all my needs and dupes. I'll post a link in this thread once I've posted over there.
