The Caligula/Vesta As just arrived! Awesome in hand!

This thing is really sharp. Arrived from Nemesis today.

Looks better in hand- really sharp. The photo brings out all the tiny pits and pocks and minor flaws, which, though present, are not a distraction with the coin in hand.

For a big bronze with such a high relief, this one has some sharp details.

(edit- I just realized I used the word "sharp" three times. Oh well. Guess you have my first impression of the coin, now, haha.)

I wonder how long they circulated. After Caligula's reign, weren't some of his monuments and such torn down in an attempt to "erase" him? I mean, if he were hated so much, would some of his coins have been defaced? I suppose some made their way into hoards before that, though. I have seen sharper ones than this, but for the price, I thought this one looked very nice, and now that it is here, I am glad I bought it.

That is a "sharp" looking coin, especially for the price.

I don't know of any examples of Caligula's coins being defaced, but there examples of attempted "Damnatio Memoriae" on coins of Geta.

Thanks, and thanks for your original input when I was mulling it over.

This makes a nice companion coin to the Claudius I bought from you.

On lordmarcovan's coin, the seated Vesta's head looks like Caligula's head.

I wonder if that was intentional.

Hmm, Vesta is a bit mannish, now that you mention it.

    But I doubt it's intentional.

Kinda like those early US large cents from the 1790s (what was it, a 1795?) that has a variety referred to as a "Jefferson Head". Sorta makes you wonder.

I think this is now my favorite behind the Zeno solidus.

My Trajan denarius (ex-Ajaan, ex-Greener collection), which was quite affordable, is another piece that qualifies for the "sharp" adjective, in my opinion.
