Thinking about Mastro

I have several large orders coming back (eventually) from PSA. I was thinking about giving them a shot with a complete graded set. I wanted to know the experiences that people have had with Mastro, good, bad,or otherwise. Any questions that i need to ask up front.....

Watch 'em. I purchased a partially graded 57' set and they over rated the raw. Said it was 90% Nm-mt. That was horse sht. More like 50% ex-mt . Also, a number of the cards came back short (minisize) from PSA. chaz

Make sure to ask them if there is an extra charge for pressing out light wrinkles or erasing pencil marks.

They do not consider this alteration. image

They will however spend time composing a glowing vibrant treatise describing your set and its ever increasing place in history that overshadows any minor flaws that may discourage bidders.

I would avoid them. Mastro has been getting a lot of bad press lately on the hobby message boards.

Now, now guys! Let's not paint such a bleak picture here.

Every house has its pros and cons. Why not go with the best?

Mastro in my opinion has the clientel to get you the most money for your items. They are the #1 choice of most collectors looking to move their big ticket items for a reason.

I just sent them 12 sets to auction. I checked out all the houses and Mastro was THE choice.

EDIT: Changed set count to 12
    57 Topps (83%) 7.61
    61 Topps (100%) 7.96
    62 Parkhurst (100%) 8.70
    63 Topps (100%) 7.96
    63 York WB's (50%) 8.52
    68 Topps (39%) 8.54
    69 Topps (3%) 9.00
    69 OPC (83%) 8.21
    71 Topps (100%) 9.21 #1 A.T.F.
    72 Topps (100%) 9.39
    73 Topps (13%) 9.35
    74 OPC WHA (95%) 8.57
    75 Topps (50%) 9.23

They do over grade raw cards. They provide deceitful advertising when describing raw cards and partially graded sets with the majority of the set being raw. I wonder how many complaints have been filed against them with the better business bureau. Add the alterations they have admitted to in a public forum. If you have any high end raw cards, you would be wise to grade them yourself before sending off to any auction house. If you have high end cards try Robert Edwards. They are first class and leagues above Mastros.

Actually Bob I was being sarcastic. While Mastro has admitted to performing some extra services on cards to increase value, they are at the top. It is the seller and buyer's choice to give them business. I'm sure that they will weather the current squall.

Heck even one of their head honchos recently opined that the collecting community represented here and on other boards is a small percentage of their buying audience. They make most of their money from people with deeper pockets and "sotto voce."

Those are the people that matter and keep Mastro as one of the top auction houses.

Good luck with your sets. Seriously.

You mean like extra services on the famous T206 Wagner?

The new book entitled "The Card: Collectors, Con Men, and the True Story of History's Most Desired Baseball Card" also does not paint a pretty picture about Mastro. His reputation is really taking a beating recently.

"You're taking this very personal. Tom, this is business and this man is taking it very, very personal."
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

The sad part is they freely admit to doing it, have no problem doing it, BUT don't disclose it in their auctions.

    Absolutely freaking mind blowing.......
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

Somewhere you guys got way off track---I said Graded Set. I want to know how people have done here with complete graded sets. Not ungraded. If it was ungraded i could over rate it myself on ebay.image

We know what you said. But we also wanted to interject what Mastro does with a raw mix. Can't much go wrong with a graded PSA set... I don't see how Mastro can screw that up but they certainly can screw up a raw mix set. chaz

No arguement there. One set will be a 1935 ARDATH LARGE Movie Star card set. Instead of the T206 (type size) this is the large variation (baseball card size). I am expecting (like always) high grades. There is virtually no cracking in the gloss on these very tempermental cards. There is a set on PSA with photos in the registry.
