Estimated Grades?

Should "Estimated Grades" compete with PCGS graded coins in the Registry? I am sure most of these coins were looked upon by PCGS advisory boards in the past, but were never actually recorded by PCGS or slabbed by PCGS. To me this would not be any different than having an NGC, ANACS or any other company competing in the Registry. Example: 1900 Proof 20$ in the Eliasberg set has an PCGS pop of 0/0, but is in the 1900 Proof set with gold. Any comments Please.

CoinKing1969, Welcome to the boards. I think you are referring to the famous sets of people like Eilasberg. The few sets they have up with estimated grades are from famous sets, and were put together way before PCGS was even thought of. It would be a pitty not to recongize such sets. I would think with all the autions of these coins over the years, that the grades are pretty accurate.

  • I have great respect for Mr. Eliasberg and others in his generation. I have several of his pedigree coins in PCGS and NGC. One example I have is the 1904 Proof Barber dime graded by PCGS PR63(green label). The Registry lists this coin as "estimated PR64" in the Proof Barber dime under Eliasberg collection. Maybe not the same dime, but makes me wonder if some coins were not accurate in all(some worse, some better). I think these sets should be listed for respect and for reference, but not competing.

Just a thought on that coin time, handling, and maybe a change or two of the holder may of droped the grade from when it was in the set. And it may not be the same coin.
And I would not worry too much about the all time sets or even the retired sets for ranking. Look to the current finest if that is your thing.

  • Not too worried myself. I just could not find an 1900 20$ PR 67CAM in PCGS nor NGC populations. Also I could not find an 1901 quarter PR68 in PCGS nor NGC either. All listed as estimated grades by PCGS experts. My understanding is that they were from the 1970's and 1980's auction catalog notes and some from floor viewing. To my original question "Should estimated grades compete with PCGS registry sets." Maybe over exaggerated, maybe under exaggerated. image
